15k Oil Analysis Results

I forget, Al. Are you running a Bypass filter or just the Full Flow filter?

I was contemplating using AMSOil in the motor, but with the good reviews that the new Mobil 1 formulation was getting over on the oil board, I decided to switch to Mobil 1 from the Valvoline Syn that I was using. Its a little more expensive than Valvoline but still cheaper than AMSOil.

What oil board? I'm interested.

No bypass filter setup ( yet ),

Vontacr AgExplorer and get a discounted price on Amsoil goodies. I highly recommend Amsoil ( and I am a former Mobil 1 user ).

Did you have any problems with the Mobil 1? I'm using AMSOil in the transmission and the t-case, but I'm not really interested in extended oil change intervals (I usually go about 5 - 6k). I think Mobil 1 will be ok for me in the motor. I'm sure that I could probably stretch it further if I did oil analysis, but I'm not really comitted to that kind of program at this point.

I'm saving the real estate that I would need for a bypass filter for another trans cooler and trans filter. I should have that done by xmas.

While we're all talking about ...

oil analysises, here are a few of mine from my '97 SOHC. I have a sample sitting in my garage that I keep meaning to send in of Mobil 1 with about 5K on it. For now, here is what I have:

Robert: What is the copper additive comment referring to? Are all of the analysis's for the new SuperSyn formula or for the previous Tri-Syn formula or both? They still have both types available at Walmart and the other stores that I have checked, but according to a couple of threads I saw on the oil board, the new formula (SuperSyn) is supposed to be better.

The Mobil 1 oil that was analyzed in the last sample (86246 miles) was purchased at Wal-mart around 12/01 in the 5-quart container. I don't know if it was the new or old product though. I suspect it was the older product since I haven't seen the 5 quart containers at Wal-Mart for several months. The sample before (75951 miles) was Quaker State. I did an oil change in between with Quaker State but didn't get it analyzed. I can't remember what brand the first analysis was done on (70292 miles).

Regarding the copper statement, they noted the high concentration of copper with the 75951 sample and attributed it to the high copper additives in Quaker State. When I used Mobil 1 they noticed that my copper had decreased significantly from my previous sample which they attributed to Mobil 1 not having as high of copper content. They never said it was bad, only that it was just one of the additives in Quaker State.

That is one of the things I like about Blackstone Laboratories. They keep my vehicle records on file. They look up historical data when they see sudden changes (such as high or low copper from previous readings) and explain what the difference means. One of these days I'll get around to mailing them my last Mobil 1 sample to see if my lead values are still unusually high.

Alldive
Your iron percentage do look high, that can't be good to have iron running around in your engine... I do believe the oil itself is still good, but what about all the particulate insuluable matter floating around.

Robert
So is copper good? I do like Blackstone's comprehesive report, allows for easier comparison. I would be interested in the 5k Mobile 1, since that is what I do.

I use Mobile 1 for the low temp and starting benefits gained from the low pouring temp, but I due change every 5k or less to rid my engine of insoluable dirt in the oil. I am impressed being able to run 5k without adding any oil (still to the fill line).

I used Penzoil dino oil in my escort. 220k and no problems, used a little oil though.

I don't know what benefit copper has on an engine, but it is something Quaker State either adds to their oil or doesn't remove from their stock. In either case it hasn't caused any problems since Quaker State is the brand I choose 75% of the time. I switched over to Mobil 1 when I could get 5 quarts for $18 at Wal-Mart. Now that they discontinued the 5 quart jugs and sell the 6 quarts for $25, I went back to Quaker State. Besides Quaker State and Mobil 1, I doubt if I've ever done more than 2 other changes with another brand.

No more 5qt jugs, that sucks. What car takes 6 qts?
$25? WOW Thats $7 for that last qt.

I think we still have the 5qt jugs around here. I guess I should stock up.

Its not like you have to throw the last qt away....once you buy five cases, you get one oil change for free :D j/k no math lessons please

I am using Mobil 1, but I get nervous at about 8k miles, especially looking at the dirty oil on the dipstick, so I change it.

Have you had an oil analysis performed?

I know, but you still have that big ole jug with a measly qt at the bottom taking up space, like the gallon of milk in the fridge with enough milk in it use as creamer in one cup of coffee..

Plus It's not free. $18/5qt, $25/6qt, $7/last qt. After 5 cases you have 5 extra qts for oil change. 5 qts at $7/qt $35 for that oil change. Or I guess you could say its would be $4.25/qt, thats the same price as buying qt bottles, no savings. Atleast $18/5qt was a bargain.

The 6 qt case is individual qt bottles, not a 6 qt bottle. Actually its more expensive, about $4.89 / qt at Walmart here. I have only seen the 5 qt bottles once here, they are a good deal, so stock up when you see them.

P.S. j/k means just kidding; it was an attempt at humor

the only time I would leave oil in my engine for that long would be if I had a bypass filter....

Its not the oil breaking down that I would worry about, its the stuff floating in the oil that I would worry about wearing out my engine. We all know that Mobil one synth will last way longer then 3000 miles, but I religiously change it at 3,000 anyways because I dont want that crap going back in there, the oil itself is finem its the particles floating in it I am getting rid of....

Also I had 180K miles on my 2.9L when I yanked it and it still ran perfect, internally it looked brand new, so I will continue with my synth Mobil and my 3000 intervals. Sometimes I let it go to4-5K but I really try to hit 3......

Al, Consumer Reports did a test on a Fleet of Taxis and they found that all (that met Manufactures requirements) Dino oils did a great job and at 100K miles the engines showed little wear. The test had 7K oil change intervals under seveer driving conitions. I agree, synthetic lubes are better but not worth the added cost when compared to Dino. Even if you are fortunate enough to run up 100-200K on a motor the rest of the vehicle is going to be worn and in need of replacement.:) IMO

I completely agree. I have an old Subaru 4X4 wagon with 141,000 miles on it and it still runs great. However the body is beginning to rust out in places and plastic parts are starting to fail. I change the oil at 3-4,000 miles with $.70 a quart Quaker State or Pennzoil, which ever is on sale at the time, and never have to send my oil in for analysis. Since my X seems to be about 60% plastic parts I don't see it going for 200,000 plus miles so the added cost of synthetic oil just doesn't seem worth giving up my free oil changes.
