I just got a set of beautyful Cobera R's 17 inch rims.
Obviously my factory spare is a 16.
If ( GOD forbid ) i were to ever get a flat, it would be bad to run dissimular size wheels. Does a 17' spare exist ? Would it fit under my Ex ?

Thanks people.

On that I can reply. I have 18's now, and I also bought a 17" late Mountaineer wheel. I bought a used 275/60/17 (30") for my spare. I have a trailer hitch, and I had to cut off about 1/4" of the backside of the receiver for clearance. It fits snugly underneath.
Pick a normal wheel that you like, and mount a cheap tire on it. Good luck,
DonW

The height of the tire is all you really need to be concerned about. As long as they are somewhat close in height you'll be fine.

Yes, if you are using the same diameter 17's as the stock tires, then you need change nothing.

yeah I didn't think about that.
The stock tires are rather tall and the P-Zeros are a bit shorter I just may have dodged this bullet.
Good point thank for bringing it up.

Post the size of the tires you're running now and the size you're spare is and I'll do the math right quick for ya

if you're spare is a 16" its probably a 255/70R16 which is 30.06" in diameter

If you're running a 265/60R17 (which my father is running) >> 29.52"

Or 265/55R17 >> 28.48"

I was just thinking about that today: running (for example) 30" tires but having a stock 28" spare. What would that do if you had to use the spare?

255 60 R 17 currently on.
It is raining so I don't want to lay on my back to look at the spare and the old wheels are at the shop so,,,,,,,,,.

It is what ever it came with. Goodyear Wranglers, I guess they were the firestone replacements.
I'll post the old sizes tomorrow.

If you have a 2wd position no problem. If you have control trac, it can cause the system to sparatically kick in and out of 4wd, hurting the trans or transfer case.

If you have a shorter, or taller spare, you should run it on the front if you ever get a flat. The open differential will be more forgiving than the rear l/s.

Aight your 255/60R17 >> 29.04"

Judging from your Avatar, you have 16" rims and I've never known Sports with 16" rims to run anything other than a 255/60R17 >> 30.06"

So, you should listen to Section's advice (which I was going to type but he beat me to it)

The open diff will not be affected at all by the different tire sizes, but the rear L/S (if you have one) will be eaten up. Not so much as me running 32's with a 30" spare, but still the point remains.

So you get to do what I will have to do, which is put the spare up front and the front tire on the rear

Didn't think about that, the wheel speed sensors up front may think one wheel is slipping (rotating faster) but I doubt it. Might want to do the brown wire mod so you can ensure the x-fer case doesn't kick in in the event you have to run the spare. Also, the brown wire mod allows 2HI which is great for snow donuts, and 2LO which is great for burnouts (if you trust stressing everything) or steep mountain descents on dry pavement and no brakes :)

Just air-down the taller one. :p

Section, that's my plan if I have to use my 30" spare with my 30.5" 18's. Ill take some air out of the taller three, for the AWD.

255 70 R 16 on the old wheels
You are SO smart Hokie

That's a 30" tire. With 29" tires, a 30" spare is too tall. You should try to get something 29.5" or shorter. Look for a 235/70/16(29"), 245/70/16(29.5"), or a 255/65/16(29"). This assumes that you have a 16" spare wheel. What 17" wheel did you get? Maybe you could find another same wheel and tire? LOL,

LoL, Hokie got bored in Econ one day and wrote a program in my TI86 that does tire conversions for me...

I'm such an engi-nerd it makes me sick sometimes

well its a good thing, the program.. and you being sick.. alright maybe not the program :P

Must come in handy, such as this situation. Just out of curiosity, what is a TI86?

I bought X-24's Cobera R's. No, I will not be hunting down one of those for a spare :)
I think I am just gonna get a cheapish 255/65/16 so I don't have to deal with the whole front to rear and remembering to hit my BWM switch.
Sales are every weekend on tires and for a spare it doesn't need to be any thing fancy.

You guys have been a tremendous help.
