1989 Ranger questions

Well i scored my brother a pretty clean little ranger yesterday. 89 extra cab with a 2.9 v6 and auto trans. 4.10 gears with a LS and power everything.

My question is there anything to keep an eye on with these? Ive heard bad things about the 2.9 and we all know the 4ald is crap, but it came with a spare trans so no big deal there.

Is he going to street drive it or join the crew?

2wd, it will get a small lift and 31's for now. It will get built down the line, but he needs it to DD back and forth to the fire academy and school.

With the 2.9L and the A4LD auto (in 89):
tranny cooler (if it has one add another or get a bigger one)
good idea to get a spare TFI module and the thumb wrench thats needed to swap them out. They are PRONE to failure, when it goes the truck is dead in the water (no spark) UNLESS you carry a spare

a 4.0L radiator with trans cooler would be a REALLY nice upgrade for that sucker, as well as a 180 degree thermostat

Hmmm good advice, thanks. Maybe we will hit up pick a part half off weekend and pick up a 4.0 radiator.

It will get built, equal length beams, swingset steeing, links, but all after he's done with the fire academy and can afford another daily driver.

More than likely 5.0 and c4/c5 lol. My explorer is bieng built soon and i keep thinking about a c5 with the 4.0 but not having OD isnt a good thing.
