1992 EB Panel Window Replacement?

I did some searching but can't find the information I need.

Has anyone replaced a panel window on a '92 Explorer before? I have one with a shattered glass and would rather not have to pay a shop to perform the replacement if it's something I can do myself. Any tips or tricks? As for technical skill, I can build engines, but I know popping a window out of place and putting it back in is a little more delicate than banging a bunch of metal parts together. :D

Any advice would be greatly appreciated, as it rains a lot down here in Louisiana and it's looking like rain for the next week. Just shattered the window out today.

This was the glass before I brilliantly shut the driver door and created the outward explosion of glass.

...The outside trim has studs on it that goes thru the body of your X...You will need to pull the interior panel to see the nuts that attach to those studs...I hope this helps...:D
 






I'd use some ducktape on all glass as possible. I know the glass is designed to stay in place, but I'd rather use a bunch of duck tape to "stick" the pieces together so in case something happens, you won't have a bazillion pieces. I'd do it on teh inside and outside.

Like mentioned earlier, you have to pull the trim back. Once you get the trim pulled back, you shoudl be able to make a lot more sense of it. Good Luck.

Yeah- I thought it was aftermarket tint, which would have held it together, but definitely factory tinted glass, which means when I shut the driver door, the pressure inside burst out through the window. I have a trash bag over the window now and taped a good portion of it, but as hot as it was today the duct tape was having enough trouble just sticking and I'd have had to put enough pressure that I'd have been pushing the glass straight through.

Thanks a lot on the advice for the studs/nuts and removing the interior panel. On my old Crown Victoria station wagon the trim popped right off and the glass screwed on from the outside, so I'd have probably broken the replacement panel at the junk yard trying to get the damn trim off.

If I have any more trouble I'll post back up. If I end up doing the replacement myself (we're actually trying to sell the truck) I'll take pictures and post up for future searches.

There are about 10 nuts on the inside. It takes longer to pull the inner plasic then it does the window. super simple, They are about $15 bucks in the junkyard. 1st and 2nd gen windows are the same size and mounting, just the outside molding is different.;)
 






Take out all the nuts that hold the window in place...

Take SOFT RUBBER MALLET and hit the window around the perimeter near the bolts to loosen it up....not too much in one spot though.

Yet again, excellent advice. Thanks a lot, guys. Hoping to do it today or tomorrow since my old job gave me a couple weeks unpaid leave ( :rolleyes: ) before I start my new job. :D
 






Oh- by the way... what should I use to re-seal the window once I install the new one on the current Ex?
 






Why should you use anything? The factory did it dry.

I think all you'd need to reinstall it is the rubber molding around it. I'm not sure if it was sealed or not using silicone or likewise. Just take a looksy when it's taken off.
 






Sorry I didn't update this sooner- I've been Hella busy.

I swapped the panel on Monday. $26 at the junk yard. Even sneaked out a set of new injectors for my Town Car.

There was a strip of double-adhesive weatherstrip between the window panel and the body. It stayed in excellent shape when the window came off so I reused it and it's been storming since with no compromise of seal, so seems to have worked out great.

It took about 40 minutes to tape all the glass to avoid it falling apart when I removed the trim and about twelve minutes to remove the old panel and install the new one. Hehe. Sorry I didn't get progress pictures- it was hot as balls that day and I just wanted to finish and get back to the air conditioning.

Here's the final product:

Came out looking great- the one at the yard even had identical factory tint.
