1992 EXPLORER
1992 Tranny Slipping, OD Gone

Hey guys, I have a 92 EXPLORER and my damn OD just **** the bed.
It was leaking tranny fluid and kinda slipping, since I have NO money, I just keep putting in fluid until I got a break. But going down the road, I slowed down, RPMs running to redline, I drop into Drive and drove home with out any issues. Checked the fluid, it is ok, OD NOT working, Drive is starting to slip, It is going to die!! Now, with that being sad, What trannies will fit into a 1992 Ford Explorer, Automatic - 4.0 V/6. Ranger, Other model Explorer, F-150, Expedition, Honda Civic? Please help, BTW, I have junk yards EVERYWHERE here. :D

wait, so you n-bombed your explorer at redline now overdrive wont work :burnout:

Obviously, one from a '92 4x4 Ex would be most preferable, but I'm pretty sure the following will fit (HAS TO BE FROM A 4.0!!!!)

1st gen Ex ('91-'94, '95+'96 might work)
Aerostar (Pre '95)
'92-'94 Ranger

Now I've read from this board that the 4wd tranny is the same as the 2wd but I don't know for sure so you had better check.

If you are really in a bind, I think a 2.9 A4LD will bolt to the 4.0 but it is was not meant to stand up to the power of the 4.0 so it won't last long.

Might be best off to save your pennies for a rebuilt tranny. I've seen them going for $600-$700 plus core on ebay. Just search on "A4LD".

Good luck!

The '95 and '96 Explorers use the 4R55E, so unless you want to swap some computers and do some wiring, stay away from those.
