1992 Explorer - an amuzing low fuel warning

Just an interesting bit of info...
'92 Explorer XLT with 263K miles, that I've owned for only 3 months...

I knew it was low on fuel, but...
the Dashboard started "clicking" about twice per second,
and the interior dome light flashed on/off with the clicking.
I've never seen this before, so I didn't know what was happening.
I filled up with gas...
the Owner's Manual says the capacity is 19.3 gallons...
I put in 19.46. Gee... I guess it was kinda' low.

Anyway... that stopped the Clicking and dome light Flashing.
I've never experienced that type of "low fuel" warning before.
And I've never seen that scenario since.
I ASSUME that it Was, in fact, a "low fuel" warning.

Just thought I'd offer an interesting tid-bit of info.

The 4dr. Explorers have 22 gallon tanks, you were getting close to empty. I've put 21.5 gallons in countless times, and right at 22 gallons 2-3 times.

I'd say you have an electrical issue, keep an eye out for it.

...The first gens had a bad light switch unit and IIRC there was a recall on them...

...I second an electrical short as being a coincidence while you were running low on fuel... I also have the 19 gallon tank but the specs don't say how much the fuel filler hose can hold...
