I recently purchase a used 1992 Ford Explorer Automatic with a 4x4 manual transmission. I don't use this car as a primary vehicle (have a 2003 Ford Ranger as backup), but I am wondering about a few issues. I took it over to a local Ford dealership and had a 115,000 mile service done on it and they said everything looked good.

1. When I start it up in the morning, it doesn't shift out of first. I usually put it in 2 and drive at about 35 miles an hour until the temperature gauge shows that its getting warm. Is there a problem with driving in 2? Will I ruin the transmission that way? After it gets warmed up, it shifts great.

2. Even though I have the fan off, there is still air blowing into the cab. I was just wondering if there is a simple fix to this.

3. I want to bolt through a mount on the inside of the cab through the transmission hump. I know there is a lot down there and was wondering if its even possible to bolt it down to the undercarriage without damaging something vital.

Like I said, these are very minor issues to me, but I want to make sure this vehicle lasts for awhile and want to know what I should be doing and what I shouldn't be doing. You can email me at firephoto@sbcglobal.net or just respond hereif you have all the answers or just one of them. Thanks in advance.

well of course its going to warm up your probly reving it to 6 grand in 2nd

Well, according to my rpm gauge its about 2500-3000 rpms. When I'm in overdrive, I do 70 mps per hour with cruise control on and its at 2500 rpms.

Not to steal the spotlight but I have 1992 4.0L 4x4 Manualk trans with the exact problem with the heater as you do.It is in the off position and it feels like it is in the med position. My manual trans is hard to shift 2-1 but the clutch is so heavy in it too.I would love to hear some answers too.

im pretty sure the fan should still be on on the lowest setting, but you shouldnt really be able to tell its on. I dont find the clutch to be heavy, but then again i learned to drive stick on porsche 911's which have heavy clutches, so it could just be relative. By 2->1 shift i assume you mean from a stop, like when you come to a light/sign?

fire: do a search, i dont have an auto trans, but i know that not shifting out of first when cold is a common issue. Im not sure what exactly you mean as far as mounting something through the transmission tunnel?

Yeah, 2-1 shift when comming or at a stop light. When in traffic waiting at a light,I have to put in neutral and let my left leg rest.I think i just need to replace the clutch.
