I have a 92 xlt I purchased not so long ago. I knew that the engine had been replaced and the original trans re-built but.... so now I know when looking at schematics and diagrams for a 92 it dosent look anything like what I have. My question is how can I find out how to tell what year my engine is? If I am correct all 91-94s are the same and everything should bolt up but could the engine wire vacuum and others be a little off?

Yes, the smog equipment varies somewhat by year and I think if it originated in California or not. Diagrams and schematics from Chiltons/Autozone, etc... do have imperfections as well.

I *think* up through 93 ran R12 refigerant, where 94 and later is 134a, but that's not conclusive, it could have been upgraded, or they probably more likely would have kept the compressor with the car... doh.

Thanks... I am trying to find a way to look up the engine by serial # just basically to know if I need to order parts for a 91 92 93 or 94 not that it makes that much of a difference its more just for me to know

Ok, this is a mash-up of info from a number of sites, I think I have it right.

Engine s/n should be 8 characters like so:

example: MUC12345

These should, incidently, be the same last 8 characters of the original vehicle VIN.

The first character of the engine s/n indicates year:

M - 1991
N - 1992
P - 1993
R - 1994
S - 1995
T - 1996
V - 1997
W - 1998
X - 1999
Y - 2000
1 - 2001
2 - 2002
3 - 2003
4 - 2004
5 - 2005
6 - 2006
7 - 2007
8 - 2008
9 - 2009

The next, U, is the assembly plant (Louisville KY)

The remaining characters C12345 are serial number.

Thanks a lot Roadrunner.... it totally explains why things have been a little off. I have a 92 XLT with original rebuilt transmission but a 94 4.0 rebuilt engine according to the info from the s/n on the engine. It doesn't really matter in the long run just good to know.
