1993 Explorer 4wd problem

Hi, I am new here and could use some help. I bought an Explorer XLT new in 1993. It has been a great vehicle! It now has 114k miles on it, which, I know, is low.

I did not know that I should have been using my 4wd at least once a month. I have used it on cross country trips, and once in a while when it snowed her in Portland. Always worked fine.

Now, nothing. Zip. Squat. Diddly. The light on the dash illuminating the buttons works, but nothing when I push it. Makes no sound, no clicking, nothing.

I could sure used some help! Simplest things first, please!

So let me get this straight. The lights are illuminating? Which ones? The ones in the dash or the ones next to the buttons or both? But no clicking from the rear?

The 4x4 control module could be bad possibly. But I'm not sure if the lights would still come on if that was bad. There's a way to test the module, but I can't remember how to do it off the top of my head.

Most likely, the transfer case shift motor is stuck. You can open it up, clean it, and reassemble...there's a nice thread here with pictures that can help you:

You could try cleaning the motor. I just know from personal experience that when the motor on mine was stuck the lights did not come on, but I still heard clicking from the back.

YES, very common problem on these trucks.
