This Explorer belongs to a friend of mine, the symptons are coolant loss, water dripping from exhaust, and sweet smell from exhaust. Also it will run hot without the heater on and the idle is smooth but it jumps up every once in a while. when the idle does this it sounds like something is clicking on but couldn't tell anything about it. I checked the oil and it looked good. She said she had the radiator, thermostat, and fpr changed. I was wondering about the water pump? But with the water coming from the exhaust I don't know. Any help will be appreciated.

Thanks in advance! ;)

coolant loss, overheating, and sweet smelling exhaust usually means a bad head gasket

Actually, this is a good thing. This is normal. I see this all the time with all cars.

Sure, condensation from the exhaust is normal....................but with coolant loss, and the smell of antifreeze from the exhaust, I think there is a problem there.

To test for head gasket problems:
1. check oil(if it is milky)
2. usually the vehicle will emit alot of white smoke
3. perform a compression check( you can buy a gauge @ autozone for $10.00
:burnout:

:) OK thanks for all the replies.
The head gasket is what i was afraid of but hoping that just maybe it could be something else so guess we'll start with a compression check. the oil looks fine. it doesn't look milky. Also the coolant looks fine but disappears fairly fast. It does have white smoke though.

:us: Thanks again :us:

Possible cracked block???

It appears that I have the same problem as you do. Do you also notice that your Explorer 's heater isn't working until you start driving it? If you solve this problem please let me know. Thanks

You may not exhibit any of these symptoms (and a compression check may not tell you anything) and still have a blown head gasket or similar problem. From the symptoms described, I would agree that you have either a blown head gasket and/or warped head or a cracked block. I'd lean towards the head gasket. My Zuk was eating coolant and overheating, but had clean oil, no white smoke, and the compression was fine. Only found the root of the problem after filling the radiator, running until hot, and then pulling the plugs. Turned the motor over and water shot out of the #3 spark plug hole.

The proof positive test is to check for exhaust gases in your coolant. There are kits out there that you can use to check it yourself, but with your symptoms, I wouldn't bother. I would try a compression test to see if you can tell which bank it's from so you don't have to completely disassemble the motor if it's not necessary.
