I been having an intermittent starting problem with my explorer for more than a year. I have had the same problem a dozen times. A few months ago it would not start and a few days later, after attempting to start it daily, it started. It was fine for a few months and this morning the same thing, no start. It turns over fine and when it runs, it runs fine. The computer codes reports a P0442 or a small vac leak and suggestions?

When it doesn't want to start have you checked to see if your getting spark and fuel, and when you turn the key to the run position (before engaging the starter), can you hear the fuel pump do it's 2 second prime???

Also when you say it doesnt start, do you mean you crank and crank until the battery gets weak and it never turns over? Or do you mean you turn the key and NOTHING happens.

Answer those and SVO's questions and that will help poinbt you in the right direction of what to check next.

The Explorer turns over as normal. I hear the fuel pump and can, after many trys smell fuel. A timing light indicated no spark, during one, non-starting episode. I have replaced the ignition module and still the problem. I have also circulated the relays and no result. Would a timing sensor show up on the PCM as a possible problem.

*** After letting the vehicle sit for 6 hours, it started with no problem! And no new codes with no check engine light! This morning it started as well with no issue and I drove it 50 miles with no issues. Has anyone heard of the timing sensor being intermittent and tapping on it temporary restores the device?

sounds like the same behavior I had when my crank position sensor went out on me.

Yah. What he said! LOL
