When i am coming to a stop the anti-lock brakes kick on within the last approx 10 feet of the stop. This does not happen all the time but seems to be happening more and more frequently.

This is on a 97 Explorer XLT AWD. 5.0 automatic.

I have looked over the brakes. The rear brakes were prety warn so i replaced them. Also i had noticed the the brake peddle was bleading down so i have installled a new, not an aftermarket mastercylinder.

Any suggestions?

Unplug the ABS wheel sensors one at a time until the problem goes away, then replace the faulty wheel speed sensor. It could also be the VSS but if your speedometer is functioning correctly it's doubtful. Or take it to a mechanic with a scanner that can read ABS codes. What is happening most likley is a wheel speed sensor thinks that a tire is trying to lockup so it's kicking on the ABS, or you do have a lockup problem which would indicate everything working correctly. Also, if it pulls left when the ABS is on that usually indicates a right side sensor or vice versa. If no pull it could be rear. One thing to look at before replacing a sensor that may not be faulty is how much brake dust and metalic shavings have accumulated on the ABS ring and sensor, some brake cleaner and compressed air usually solve the problem.

Do you see an ABS light displayed? Does it light up when you switch on the key?

ABS symptoms can be from a broken hub, so these are important questions to answer accurately.

Clean the ABS sensor in each wheel, take a piece of somewhat rough sandpaper(maybe 80-150grit) depending. Rust can build up over the sensor do that for all the wheels, spray a little electric parts cleaner on the sensor. When you get done disconnect the negative battery terminal and wait 10-15 minutes then reconnect and it should work.

If it doesn't you probably have a faulty VSS
