1997 Ford Explorer XLT
Hey guys, my name is Cory. Nice to be a part of this forum group. I have a 1997 Ford Explorer that's having engine troubles. I've done some minor repairs. Last things I've done to the truck is repair starter and fuel pump. Prior to repairing the fuel pump the truck sat up for a year immobile and unable to crank. I just got the truck back running recently. The engine rumbles and the truck sputters when I put it in drive, reverse and turn on a/c. Looking for some help with this issue. Hope someone can give me a solution. Thank you.

1) make sure the fuel filter is not clogged, and fresh fuel in the tank
2) check for vacuum leaks
3) make sure animals have not damaged any wires from long periods of non usage
4) put an ob2 code reader on it while running and watch live engine data for anomalies
5) clean the mass air flow sensor
6) make sure no animals have built a home in the air filter housing and intake pipe

Cory, welcome to the forum. Is the check engine light on when the engine is running? If so you will need a code reader & pull the codes, that will help finding out the problem.

97 explorer was available with 3 engine options
4.0 OHV
4.0 SOHC
5.0
which one do you have?

All good points already posted, Run it at idle and unhook your IACV and see if it changes, if it does not it could be stuck or bad. However we really need to know what engine it is.

How old is the gas. Maybe a fuel stabilizer.
