Hi I'm looking to replace the subwoofer on my 1998 explorer, its the V8 edition, not EB. I've been looking around trying to figure out what to replace it with and I've ended up with a couple questions and a lot of confusion :D. Is the standard sub a 6.5 or 8 inch. How many Ohm is the standard sub, and what are the recommended replacement internal subwoofers if I choose to keep the same amp. Will any 8inch(assuming its 8) subwoofer with the right ohm work or do I have to get a particular one?

I'm pretty sure it's an 8 inch in the '98.

I'm not sure about the resistance but I'm thinkin' it's 4 ohm.

Someone that knows for sure should come along soon.

I too have a similar all stock system and would like to replace my stock subwoofer as well.

Should be an 8 inch, 4 ohm.

JL makes a stock replacement woofer, the 8W0. It's low power requirements work great with the factory amp. You can also go with other brands like JBL, MTX, Rockford, etc. but you'll want to get something that's really efficient and doesn't need gobs of power to work.

If you're wanting to do a budget install, you can get cheap woofers from Radio Shack or at audio shops/online with brands like BOSS. Not exactly quality but their bright red 8" might be better than the factory sub.

Mounting depth is another consideration. Some subs will need a spacer ring between the sub and factory enclosure if they are too deep and the magnet hits the rear of the enclosure.

so the factory sub is dual 2ohm?
how do you wire the 4 wires from the amp to the single coil sub?

i have a 1998 Ford Explorer Eddie Bauer and i was wondering what the gray cable of wires that run to the subwoofer is? Is it just speaker wire or is it power?

...my 1998 explorer, its the V8 edition, not EB.

I've got a '99 EB and it's also the V8 edition. FYI, the V8 plaques on the side just tells you the size of the engine, not the trim level. The V8 was available in the XLT, EB and the Limited.

I digress. :D

I ditched the stock sub long ago and mounted a decent 10" sub in an aftermarket sub box in the side pocket where the OEM sub goes. MUCH better than that crappy sub they included.

Do you still have the stock headunit?

Henry, its inthe right rear panel, just inside the tailgate

wheres the stock sub in a 98 explorer?

Here's my 93, same place in a 98. Home made cover out of the basket.

So to put it out there, I'm a complete moron when it comes to audio and fixing up anything with cars. Right now I'm in the learning process in replacing my busted 99 EB's sub with a new sub... here are my questions...

1. What are the specs of my sub?
2. What are some compatible subs?
3. And how do I get to my sub...I've read like every thread, but idk anything..I mean ANYTHING.

So if anyone could post pictures, give dumbed down details or anything..that'd be great. Or even just try and teach me some key things..would be GREATLY appreciated.

Thanks guys

Check out Parts Express. They have some good sounding 8s for cheap. They have one with a huge excursion for a 8.
