1998 X 4.3 alternator, which VIN digit tells of SOHC vs OHV?

Don't have the car here. Want to pick up alternator and take it to dotter's house this weekend to install. But looking or calling I am asked if it is VIN E or X.

Does anyone know which is SOHC and which is OHV?

1998 apparently had both.

FORD doesnt make a 4.3L, however your question is correct.
IN 98 the Explorer was available with both the SOHC and the OHV 4.0L V6..........

Somebody should be able to help you......

my 98 has an SOHC and the eight digit is an E.
