I have a 1999 Ford Explorer, V6, 4WD. I bought this used, and noticed that it will not hold back in first gear. It will hold back until i get up to around 30mph, but after that, it is like i am in neutral. i can slam the gas, and it will take off (hesitation first), but when i let off, it is like i am in neutral again. Normal driving seems kind of sluggish also. I can barely feel the shifts up through the gears, and i feel like it is slipping a little, but i am not familiar with the explorer's. Does this sound like i should do the valve body rebuild? If so, i will need to read everything really closely because all that i have done with a tranny is change the fluid and filter.

If the rebuild is in store here, how do i know which tranny i have, and which parts to order? I would appreciate any help.

Thanks
Jason

Welcome to the site!!

I believe there's a TSB that covers your issue. #03-22-10 NOV 03 A/T - No 2nd, 3rd Gear/No Engine Braking/DTC's Set .

I'd check that out first and see what it recommends.

in 1999 Just FYI there were two V6 engines available, the OHV and the SOHC, howver they both use the same transmission

where can i find the tsb that you are referring to? i tried finding it with a google search, but had no luck.

btw... all of the gears seem to be working fine, but seem to be slipping a little to me. they may not be, but it seems that i am revving the engine higher than what is required to move....it is hard to explain.

Thanks for the warm welcome.

I look forward to more help.

Thanks
Jason

Any more ideas guys? One of the symptoms in the rebuild diary is that 1st gear will not hold back...that is why i thought of that solution.

Also, there is not hold back at all in 4wd lo. It does the same thing as if i am in neutral.

Any ideas?

Thanks for the help.

Jason

blown out valve body gaskets.

Thanks for the reply. I think that i am going to do the valve bodt rebuild while i am changing the gasket. The problem in the thread you suggested was right on with my problem. I am going to take a day and do all of it at once.

Thanks again for your help.

Jason
