I apologize if this is in the wrong section. To begin with I already have an aftermarket head unit installed, The subwoofer in my 1st gen sounds like a tin can rattling. I would like to replace just the sub which I believe is a 6",I have read that some explorers came with an 8", I would like to keep the factory amp and enclosure(for now), is it possible to just buy an 8" sub and install it into the enclosure by modifying the sub opening. I read that the JL 8W0 is a direct fit. Please anyone with any experience, knowledge chime in and give me you honest opinion. Looking to spend as little money as possible for now until I have more to do a complete audio overhaul. Thanks in Advance!

JL audio makes a 6.5 sub, the 6W0, which is a direct fit for the 1st gen enclosure.

You CAN make a 8" sub fit IF it's shallow enough or by using a spacer and just cutting the factory opening to the right size for the new sub.

The 8W0 will work for this, especially if you want to use the factory amp. Pioneer makes a 8" shallow sub under their Premier brand that works good as well. The JBL GTO 8" sub is pretty shallow and will also work, and is the best deal of the bunch at ~$60-70.

If you're wanting to spend as little money as possible, you can find cheap 8" subs on ebay, one company called BOSS makes a chaos 8" sub that should work nicely.

Thanks for the information

I think I might go the JL 8W0 route, I like the idea of a larger subwoofer, do you think that I will have fitment issues with the factory grill due to the spacer? Another question, what explorers have the 8" enclosures, could I simply pick one up at a junk yard and swap them out. Thanks!

The '95-98 Explorers with the MACH stereo systems came with an 8" sub.

The 91-94 factory enclosure is smaller and meets the smaller space requirements of the shallow subs, so there's not much reason to go to the trouble of getting another enclosure.

If you do get the other enclosure, I am looking for a 91-94 enclosure.

is it possible to replace the enclosure in the gen 1 from the 95-98(8")? Thanks?

Yes, the enclosure from the 95-98's will fit in the 91-94's.

If you do the swap and don't want your stock enclosure let me know, I might take if off your hands depending what style it is.

You can have the enclosure from mine , I sure don't need it.

If your looking for low cost why not just buy a used car sub with a box on craigslist or something. The stock enclosures aren't very good anyway.

i have a 91 eb and i bought an 8 inch memphis sub. then i cut out the original mounting lip in the stock enclosure then used screws and just screwed the sub to the enclosure worked like a charm. bumps good to.

^^^my new hobby

What did you end up going with DCU? size/fitment? Good, bad, ugly?

My old head unit got stolen out of my X about 3 years back and I finally got a new one, and then promptly blew the sub. I tell myself it was on its way out anyway. I was thinking of going with the JBL GTO 8" sub that Anime suggested, and wanted to hear what happened with you. :D

Are you planning on keeping the stock enclosure? I am hoping to do so as I need all the cargo room I can get.

well i might put my 6x9s in the rear gate thing. idk what im going to do yet. but forsure the 6" in the doors.
