the thing i hate about changing oil in my explorer is changing the filter. i always spill oil on myself and the ground. but the worst thing to cahnge is the sparkplugs. i do it myself on all my cars except the explorer. i dont know how to reach them.

Try drilling a hole in the bottom of the filter and drain the oil before removing it.

Good luck.

I am glad I read that thing on oil filters! I am also glad that before ever reading that I got a mobil 1 filter which it rated higly of, and I also got 10w 30 Mobil 1 oil

hey thats an idea. i never heard of anyone doing that, thanks.

Necessity is often the mother of invention....

I've heard of making a hole in the oil filter before taking it off, but I wouldn't want to get my drill all full of oil in the process. Instead, you might want to use a hammer and a pointed center punch to make a hole in the bottom, since it might get messy.

and I second that..... thing about a drill is that oil starts it's flow as soon as you get through, punch would be better since flow will start as soon as you take the punch out.

Good luck,

either way, it's stilla great idea. i never thought about putting a hole in the filter to drain the oil.

another nice idea would be to put a drain plug in a transmission cover so you can drain that darn thing before taking the cover off to replace filter. Every time I change tranny fluid I spill that stuff all over myself and garage floor.

An even better idea would be to have external tranny filters ( spin on like oil filters ) as well as the drain plug.

If design engineers ever had to work on their creations.....

I've always wondered why they don't have a plug in the tranny pan, that seems easy enough to do. I'd like to ask automotive engineers why they do things the way they do sometimes. But that's the way it is; I'm sure there is a perfectly logical and good reason why things are done the way they are done.

THE reason is usually that it is CHEAPER to do it that way.

plus it would be easier for certein people to perform oil and fluid changes themself. Some brake jobs require special tools...... oil change on a BMW requires a special tool to cancel "Oil Change" light on the dashboard (some know how to cancel light without that tool). it's all money for shops and mechanics. Cars don't brake down as often as they used to......

Lata,
