Ok, I just had the transmission rebuilt in my 2000 EB SOHC .

I've already replaced the timing tensioners, and didn't find any evidence of broken up guides in the oil pan.

I have what almost sounds like piston slap. You can't hear it under the hood unless you're standing towards the rear of the wheel well. It's noticeable inside, mostly when under light load (light acceleration), which tells me it's probably towards the rear of the engine.

It sounds like a hollow, medium pitched knock. It doesn't sound like a rod bearing, it's too hollow and higher pitched, and it doesn't get any worse or better cold or warm. It's always there. You can't hear it above i'd say 1800 rpms, but that could just be the engine noise drowning it out.

I'm at a loss here. I need to put more money in it (Tires, shocks, alignment), but I don't want to keep dumping money if the engine is going to grenade shortly after.

Anybody else experience this issue? It's been present for at least 5000 miles, and hasn't gotten any worse.

Guess nobody has dealt with this. It's a little difficult to explain , and it's too quiet to take a video, the noise of the video drowns out the engine noise.

I would say try to get a video. Could just be "engine".
