Greetings,

This vehicle runs fine, no problems with power and acceleration but I am not happy with the sound of the engine. The engine runs well without any hesitation, stalling, or misfiring on any octane of fuel. Nothing wrong with engine, no trouble codes, no CEL, no shaking, no excessive vibration even during hard accel, absolutely nothing. Good gas mileage, not burning any fluids, everything works. Good truck, just sounds too much like a truck. The only time it did not start was because I had ran out of fuel.

At only 156k miles, the vehicle has always been loud inside the cabin since I purchased it used in 2001; hot rod kind-of sound; I feel every cylinder in the vibration of the gas pedal. My old 91 Explorer XLT V6 4.0 that was sold for $2,600 (in 2001) to get this one had an OHV engine with 489k miles and was Lincoln quiet inside the cabin. I frequently grinded the starter because I did not know if the truck was on or off. With my 2000 Exp, I feel relieved turning it off.

Why is this 2000 Ford Exp 4.0 OHV loud inside the cabin? It is so loud inside that my passengers start to repent... it has 2nd Coming noise inside of the cabin. When I reach 70 or more MPH (shame on me), the sound smooths out and it is much quieter; I can talk with a passenger. But before that, it is hotrod-like inside of the cabin. Every other ford, including older and broken down models are much quieter inside of the cabin; puts mine to shame. Dealer and other mechanics have no clue. Dealer states that this vehicle model usually runs a little rough. Why not the other exact same models of the exact same year??? They Have No Clue.

This truck runs excellent, it is just as loud as a you-know-what out of a you-know-where. That is the only problem that I am disgusted with. Any ideas? I have cleaned the MAS, plugs, wires, the usual stuff; nothing. Open the hood, engine runs fine and vibration free. A friend recommended that I temporary hold a board over the exhaust pipe to check for leaks; no leaks anywhere; no holes, passes emissions with golden grades. I checked every inch of that exhaust system; the noise is not coming from the tail pipe or intake manifold.

Any ideas???

Tks

hhmm i have a 2000 sport with the ohv v-6 and i dont have this problem.
maybe someone put a different cam in it ?the way you describe it sounds as if it cammed up or something .
wish i could help more but without actually being there its hard .
i can say my 2000 doesnt have this much noise in the cabin.
what about some sound deadening material?
you can pull all the carpets out up front and add in sound deadening pads (they sell this at car stereo shops and the like)then put the carpet back in .

maybe the carpet was replaced and someone scrapped all the factory sound deadening material.you know that heavy black stuff under the carpet .

good luck man

Lots of vehicles equipped with airbags have panels in the firewall that are designed to blow out when the airbags deploy to release overpressure in the cabin. Maybe one these panel is ajar, allowing engine and road noise into your Ex.

I have a 2010 Explorer Limited 6 cylinder, and my feelings are exactly the same. I like everything about the vehicle but the engine noise. Plus I can hear an air leak in the right rear of it but nobody seems to be able to hear it. Even the mechanic from the dealership. I know I'm not hearing things either.
