Okay so I've been searching Google and the forum as a guest for some time. I'm having an issue with my newly acquired mountaineer 5.0. The guy I bought it from said the transmission was rebuilt but never said how long ago or why. My current issue is in reverse I'm getting a shuddering under load or going up an incline. Same with forward upper gears... as far as I can tell only 3rd and overdrive I have the forward issue, If I'm going up a hill or lay into the pedal a little with out it down shifting the transmisson slips and bucks a little. I've gone as far as changing filter and fluid from the pan. With no effect onot making it better but I am leaning towards a crack in the valve body? Any one have input before I go further?

Really no one?

These transmissions are usually trouble free. Not many here even take the time to rebuild them since replacements are so plentiful in junk yards.

That is the way most here fix the issues. 300k miles is not unheard of for these.

If I'm not mistaken, reverse and third gear share the same clutch pack.

If so then I'd put my money on the clutch being the culprit.

How clean was the pan when you looked inside?

Depends who did the rebuild too. I had mine redone in my old 97 and it last 12k miles and blew apart again. That was in my SOHC truck though not the V8. But point is depending who did the rebuild they could have screwed something up.

Have you checked the oil pressure? When you changed the oil did you check the vb for a crack?
