2001 Explorer mis firing when hot

there is no need to drop the rear axle when removing the fuel tank.

put the front in the air and check that the hubs aren't locked. and verify everything else is solid (ie. ball joints, tie rod ends, etc)

Well that symptom matches what Section has had going on in his truck for a month, and that is exactly what my alignment tech described after the test drive. I knew mine was from air in the steering, because I had a new pump, lines, and the reservoir was off and empty. The tech worked the air out by turning the wheel end to end for a few minutes. Sometimes it takes quite a while.

I don't know what else might cause such an odd symptom at one location of the steering wheel. Inspect everything in the suspension, axles etc, and check everything else as you go.
