Hi. My "Check Engine" light keeps coming on and off. The reason, according to the service tech at Ford, is that two of my spark plugs are mis-firing. He also suggested to change the wires. This problem falls under the Regular Maintenance: Tune-up guide, therefore the work is not covered by my warranty. Is there a way I can have them cover it under my warranty?

They want $532.00 to repair it. Is there any guide book that I can buy, so I can just do it myself? Thanks!

$538 for 8 spark plugs? They are yankin your chain.

There has to be a reason that those two plugs are not firing, I would take it to another dealer or shop if you dont feel comfortable diagnosing the problem yourself.

I can fly to your house and replace 8 spark plugs for $500. Something is not right with that dealer...get far away from them.....far.far.away..............

I;m so sick of dealers trying to rip people off......we need to start a list of known "good" service departments and contacts, this is getting ridiculous.

Now it may be that you just misinterprited what they said. It may be that the two plugs are not firing, and the reason they are not firing is something in the ignition and thats what is gonna cost $538, but there is no way spark plugs and wires would be more then 1 hour of labor and $50 in parts (even at dealer prices thats less then $150)

I had 2 coils and 1 plug wire replaced under warranty. Soon as it was out of warranty, another misfire occurred. Funny thing, now that it's out of warranty I can't buy one wire, had to buy the whole set. I bought them and installed the wires myself, wow was that a knuckle-busting job on a V8!!

Odd thing, the (2) coils actually fire 2 plugs at the same time, so they can help burn leftover gasses on the exhaust stroke. I didn't know they made 4 stroke engines that fired every time the piston came up! Maybe one of your coils is bad that fires 2 plugs?

Anyway, it sounds like a big rip-off to me, they just don't know you have a site like this where people want to help, not just get your $$.

Just my .02, LOL!

It sounds to me like you have a coil that is not firing. Like GR899V8 mentioned, the coil pack has siamese towers that control the spark for two cylinders. If one of the sections of the coil dies you will loose spark on two cylinders. The CEL will light (part of the OBD-II programing) and a code will be recorded for the two cylinders that misfired. The $538 that Ford wants is most likely to replace the coil pack, plugs and wires, hopeing that they can get away with not having to cover anything that could be under warranty.
