What do you guys think of the K&N Air filter? I plan on putting one in my 2001 sport, but want to see what you guys think first.

Also, what kind of exhaust should I get? I would something deep and loud... but its a v6

Another option to the K&N panel filter. Compare build quality, filtration, air flow, and most importantly, NO OIL to contaminate the MAF sensor. Only drawback is the price, quality doesn't come cheap. Regarding exhaust, purely subjective to the listener. Can also say "deep" and "loud" with the 4.0L SOHC V6 don't belong in the same sentence. It's usually one or the other, not both. GL

And I would like that nobody else drive on the streets that I drive, but unfortunately, unless you buy the streets, you need to share them.

That includes driving without being assaulted by the noise pollution created by others.
Is not only about being respectful to others, but realize that other people have rights too...

high flow air filter

The filter swshawaii posted a link to is a good alternative to the Amsoil high flow/high filtration filter that is no longer available. A drop in replacement for the stock filter is the best investment. Avoid pulling air from the engine compartment.

So you're mad about a little noise? C'mon man, go get yourself a Prius and leave this site...

If the reason for wanting a K&N filter is more airflow then you're wasting your time because the standard filter and air box isn't an airflow restriction.

Oiled filters can contaminate the air flow meter causing all sorts of problems.

The website that swshawaii linked to says that filter outflows the standard one, that may be so but your engine can't use it unless it's supercharged in some way.
Usually when a filter the same size as a standard one outflows a standard one means that it also allows more particles through.

About the exhaust: I read somewhere that a guy deleted his rear muffler and ran a straight pipe and said it wasn't too loud but it probably was.
Probably replace the rear muffler with a turbo type muffler. Or a flowmaster.
Plenty of clips on youtube.

I used to really like the K&N filters but I don't think they really do anything at all. I had one on my 2000 Sport (the cone filter) and it sounded neat, but didn't do anything. I'm happily using a stock paper filter now.

Regarding the muffler, IMO, a loud truck V6 always sounds terrible, I would save your money and the agony of others.

I think I'm starting to get a hole in my muffler and it does make the 6 cyl plenty deep and loud, in an annoying way. Fortunately it quiets back down immensely once it drops under about 2700 RPM.

I may end up taking the dual pipes into two separate mufflers instead of the factory 2-into-one muffler setup but does anyone think with two I will need to add a 2nd resonator or remove the first one to balance it out?

Loud exhausts are really cool for the first 10 minutes then the novelty wears off and you'd rather be able to hear the radio, what people are saying, etc. not even considering the annoyance to others factor.

It can also cause people to notice you more and have the perception that you're driving too fast.
