Exploders,

First time to forum, hope I have this in the correct place.

I have a 2002 4.0 V6, and up to this point have refused to put any additional money into it...but I guess that is finially wearing down.

I'm looking to make it sound a little better as it shifts through the gears, let it sound a bit "throatier". Someting in the higher RPM range.

Anyone out there with the same application, 2002 or newer, with the intake, and that as the only mod...at least before more were done to the vehicle? I'm looking to increase the rumble as the accelerator is mashed and it goes through the gears, but looking to have a minimal increase in cabin noise at higher speed, lower RPM - like no change has been made.

Anyone out there performed? I guess mileage could be a benefit as well, but I just want the thing to sound a bit cooler...Anyone have any experience with the intake out there?

I really appreciate your help/advice/experience.

You're telling me no one has an intake on a 2002 Explorer?

Soon! have an '03 with drop in K&N but I too need the growl. Sounds like a KKM is what I need, but that's just from their website and a few threads from pre 3rd gen. I've had a volant on a Sierra w/5.7 and loved that throaty roar when you stomp on it.

I have a K&N FIPK on my 96 as the only mod and it sounds pretty cool. It sounds a little meaner, but not so much that it causes too much noise inside the truck. I really didn't see a gain in gas mileage, maybe 1-2 mpg. Hope this helps.

I have an MAC Intake on my 2001 ST and it doesn't sound "throater" it just has the sound of more air flow really.

its sound do me that someone needs exhaust

I have a K&N FIPK Generation 2 intake kt in combination with a magnaflow catback exhaust and it is growls when I get on it. The intake just whistled alittle before the exhaust upgrade. The combination is what you need.

Yea i've been meaning to get a custom flowmaster super 40 exhaust but just been to busy, i got the muffler (off ebay for 40$ shipped) just gotta get the money and time (damn holidays hit me hard with my girlfriends ring)

Ha..........thanks for some comments

I had way WAY too much money in my S10 truck...It got stolen and stripped, and I lost it all, so when I got my new car, I said no money into it...you won't get it out...and here I am doing it all again...

My truck was loud. It was fun when driving around, but got annoying on long highway trips and what not. I don't want the rumble in the cab all the time, its nice when the accelerator is stomped on...thats why I asked about the "throatier"...

exhaust...ahh i dunno...but i was looking around the gibson site today....dammit.

Still...any one with a 2002 and only the intake installed? I have done some installs where the intake does no sound difference...and some where its dramatic...

thanks!

02 v6 motor is the same thing thats in bball fans 03. same motor thats in ions sport trac, their results should be similar with the results that they have posted

I definitely got a different sound with my intake, care of ebay, much more of a sucking/louder growl sound... until I really get on it, and if you've ever installed a regular wai intake on an import/domestic car you'll know what I mean, WOT on the V6 w/ intake is simply awesome to me (I'd be more than happy to audition anyone near me?) I know it's not the same year, but the engine is virtually the same, SOHC 4.0 V6.

Thanks!...

It looks like I'm going to blow some money to make this happen...

HAHA...it never ends...

I'll keep ya'll posted if interested.

My v8 might sound alittle different that the v6, not sure?

Ofcourse an aftermarket intake will sound better than a factory one and there is no 'BEST" when it comes to intakes really just opinions...some poeple seem fine having a 20$ ebay air intake some people want the "bling bling" chrome tube some people want to spend 300$ on Volant/K&N hey whatever is in your price range you will get about the same results.

Does it make a noticeable difference in gas mileage?

No, the only thing that will make a difference in gas mileage is if you sell it and buy a honda or a hybrid which i dont see happening :D

Def not happening, don't want any ugly POS's. If I can get my mileage to 18 MPG avg, I'd be happy. Right now I get about 14-15, so I'm thinking an air filter and an exhaust

It'll take a huge amount of time for the exhaust & intake mileage gain to pay off. You're looking at maybe 2 mpg more. Just drive more conservative. It's also winter gas, so you're mileage will suffer a bit.
