2002 explorer 4wd problems!

I have a 2002 explorer that engages into 4wd low as soon as it is put into gear. I push the 4wd high and auto buttons to get it to come back out, and when I turn or slow down it goes back into 4wd low again. I had to disconnect the 4wd control module to keep it in 2wd all the time. I have replaced the rear speed sensor, but don't know where the front speed sensors are or if that is what the problem is!!!

In Neutral

Try this:

Foot on the brake, start the vehicle, put it directly in Neutral. If it engages in 4low, wait a minute, then hit 4hi, wait 15 seconds, the hit 4x auto...

Listen for any sounds during the switching... Once in 4xauto, foot on the brake, put the vehicle in Park, then shift to Drive, foot on the brake still... Listen for any sounds please and see what happens...

Ok, did everything. Did not engage in 4 low when put in neutral. Hit 4 low button, light flashed, went into 4 low. waited hit 4 high, went into 4 high. went into 4 auto, 4 high light went off on dash. put in park, put back in drive, did not engage into 4 low on its own. did all 3 of the same things again, same response all times. only heard a click each time from around the control module area on the truck when engaging from low to high, high to auto, etc. Did find another thing out, it only engages on its own when turning hard to the left and hard to the right. If going forward or in reverse, it does not engage when going straight. Only when slowing down, or hard to right and hard to left. Any ideas?

There are 4wd techs here that can probably tell you exactly what's going on. It's a little early, but what the heck, they'll be along any sec.

Well, got any leads here. I don't know where to start. Don't think it is the switch, or the control module, just don't know where to begin. Replaced the rear wheel speed sensor about a year ago when it all first started. Don't know where the front wheel speed sensors are. Thought about replacing them. Where do you work?

Yes, I understand all of that. But, it doesn't explain to me why it is doing it on its own. All the time, on dry pavement. I appreciate the input, but I think my situation is a little more complex. It engages on its own, and I have to take it out of 4w while I am driving so I can drive it in 2w. Once I slow down or turn, it kicks back in 4wd and I have to do it all over again. I'm not putting it in 4wd. It is engaging on its own.

The 4wd system has a mind of its own right now... I hear you, but I was hoping that after you explained the situation fully (which you did perfectly) that a 4wd tech would have a solid response for you.

I asked you to do the button test so they could see what was functioning and what wasn't... The techs will know, I'm hoping a tech will answer...

I have a answer your transfer case wont last to much longer with it acting like this if you keep driving it!
As far as why its doing this beats the hell out of me!
