- 2002 Ford Explorer XLS
sorry for the long post. Just want to make sure no details are left outSo I am having an issue with my 2002 Ford Explorer XLS 4.0 l. We had another motor put in it by a mechanic. He swears up and down that it came out of another 2002. Whenever I picked it up we only made it 9 miles down the road before it shut off. The mechanic looked at it for months to know avail. After it said at my place for a couple months I finally had time to work on it. I just sprayed some carburetor cleaner in the intake while my wife turned it over and it fired right up. Before it would turn over and then struggle for a second or two and die. So I started driving it. I figured the mass airflow sensor had just been dirty and so I cleaned it. Well it ended up going out on me. So I replaced it. It ran fine the rest of that day. The next day the RPMs would fluctuate a little bit with it idling in park. If I revved it in park it would stay wherever I had it. If I put it in gear I would lose power every 5 seconds or so. It would go down to 1,000 RPM. After a second or two it would come back. I thought maybe I got a bad sensor. So I warranted it out put another new one on it and it ran fine the rest of that day. But the next day it did the same exact thing. It has been running better without the mass air flow sensor except for now whenever I have it in park it will still fluctuate and in drive if I am at a stop the car will die unless I keep it revved.
