2002 XLT 4 Door
Hi I'm new and have used this forum to answer many of my newly purchased explorer questions so thank you for having this site up and everyone helping. I will try to help as I can as well from the experience I have on working on this car.

I found a thread and it got moved and never really answered or concluded:

This was the exact question & problem someone else asked about that I'm having....

A/C vent problem.
Hi I am new and am having a problem with my 2002 Explorer XLT. Air is great on passenger side, however it blows warm air on driver side. Any suggestions?:

I have tried searching around the threads with little luck.

Sometimes it will blow cold ac on the driver side but not often and always consistently cold on passenger side when I set it to be.;

I'm handy so if someone can point me in the right direction of what I should do or look for I will quickly get to it and start dismantling to resolve this issue.

Please support me in answering this from your guys experiences.

Just to add value off topic of my specific quesiton::p:

Not sure if this will help anyone also but when I turn on my back ac to high I was getting a clicking over and over again! After tracking down the sound I concluded it was coming from the rear ac compressor motor or pump whatever it is but it was under the trunk driver side interior plastic molding.

Also I had bad weathering on my kick boards & plastic black corner and door pieces and read on this forum about someone trying truck bed spray paint. Well I did and everything came out great and is withstanding weathering & normal wear and tear and being stepped on over and over. The final test will come when I take it through the car wash! Dun dun dun

& I was also trying to figure out how to have the station changer on the steering wheel also. I was going to try moving the buttons from the radio it's self but they are on a sensor push pad thing that would not work unless I duck taped a circuit board on the steering wheel lol. no success :thumbdwn:

Does anyone have any info on this problem. I am experiencing this on my 2005 Explorer XLT and would like some info before I start tearing into it!!

I have and '02 and an '03 Explorer with the same problem. Warm on one side and cool on the other. Will be watching this post with interest...

I have the same problem on an 05 XLT. The far left vent blows warm and all the others are cold. I have a feeling it is some thing stupid and the duct for that side is absorbing heat of something under the dash.

The other 3 vents (middle 2 and passengerside) are all very close to the fan so they shouldn't loose any cool air. The driver's side one has to go though the dash and then out so it has to go around quite a bit and if it's right on the fire wall its gunna absorb some of the heat that come off of it.

just to update post i have a 2003 that does the same thing. any ideas. cold on rt side and warmer on left. center vent seems split also. any help will be nice.

I have a 2002 and I have the opposite issue.Cold on the drivers and warm on the passenger. The rear is ice cold as the drivers side. When I shut the passenger center and the vent near the passengers door I get a howling noise when the blower is on,but I do not get this noise on the drivers side.

Hot & cold

I read somewhere that this hot on one side, cold on the other issue is common in cars with dual climate control. The cause is either low coolant, or less commonly a broken vent directional door. In the latter case, there is apparently a door that directs AC air to each side of the car based on the dual climate control setting. More likely is that the coolant level is low. I'm not sure why that would cause one side to become warm more so than the other. Anyway, I charged my AC this weekend and have nice, cold air out of both side again. Just in time for 103 deg heat wave.

for the record, filling up my ex with more coolant fixed my problem too. 2 years since this repair.

Danggg i have the same exact problem with my 03.....i will try the recharge method anyone else have any more suggestions if this does not work?

Thread revive:

My '02 XLT won't produce heat from the rear vents.

I can get cold and hot from the front vents but the rear only blows COLD air. Set both F&R controls to fan speed4 and temp to hot, just cold air from the back. Need to get this working correctly as winter is here and my babies need their warmth!

has anyone found an answer to this? the fresh air door over the blower broke on my 2003. I removed as shown on this forum. I blocked off the holes to only have recirculated air. now I notice that passenger side is cold air and drivers is air temp

Hello All. I had this problem with my 2010 Explorer for the past two years. Checked all the doors; no issue. Replaced Heater Water valve ($20) under hood; not the source of issue. Based upon reading this and other threads, i decided to take it in and have the A/C charged and dye tested. Shop came back... no leaks, but it DID take some freon. It now blows colder than it ever did.

Knowing what i know now, my first step should have been and will be in the future, get the AC charged/tested...
