Yeah unfortunately the 3rd gens have a problematic wheel bearing issue.

will cost you about $310.00 at a dealer..
has to take alot apart... happened to me less than a week after buying my 2002..

thinking about doing it myself. any idea how much in parts and/or how intense it is?

I had mine done and I watched them and it took a long time and alot of struggling for the rear to be disassembled...and you definatly need a pres to press the new bearings on..or you can purchase the whole knuckle as they did with mine..

it is something i think i might have tackled if i had my garage then...

getting ready to tear apart my 2002 to find out where my clicking is coming from maybe the blend door????????

did you take care of it yet??

I have just recently bought a 2002 XLT just to find out that I need to change the right rear axle bearing!!!!!!! I thought I had moved away from "old" car troubles when I parked my 1991 Eddie Bauer....... So you are telling me I can not re-use the hub itself (actually the manual you are quoting...) Does this mean that, in addition to having to buy the bearing at the meager cost of 212 USD (I am living in Iceland!!!) I also have to buy the hub????? Do you have any better dravings (more detailed) than the ones you posted?????
On top of all of this I found out that the right rear spring is broken in two (2) places so I have to have that replaced at the spare part cost of 248 USD!!!!!!! **** sure does happen when you live in Iceland......
Does anyone know of a TSB on the springs (recall or anything like that)?????
The car itself though is an enjoyable change from the 1991 model................

Very late reply.....
Yes I took care of this problem, only to have to change the left rear wheel bearing twice - the secong time around my mechanic found out that the hub itself was a little bent out of shape, which was causing the failure in the bearing. Then I have had to replace the left front hub/bearing twice, since my post and have the automatic transmission re-done!!!!! Wish me luck!!!

Most probably the wheel bearing!!
