Hi to all.
I posted this in the wrong forum the one seems to be appropriate. Hope thats not a problem.
I’m new to this web site but it looks like there is a wealth of knowledge from very well informed people. I’m sure this site can solve my problem. Well I should introduce my explorer it’s a 2004 NBX 4.6 litter with 71k on the suv. It has a 5R55s transmission with 3.73 gears, control track and advance track 4x4. This my first Ford I have own in a long time and our relationship hasn't started out well. I bought the suv a week ago from a guy that said there was no problems and it was good car. He lied, the transmission stared act up one day after I got home. When I call him to ask him about his statement you bought it’s yours and hung-up. I don’t have money to take it to a shop so I must do it myself.
What I know/done so far (no codes)
1. When I came to a stop the truck would die just like you didn’t push the clutch in on a standard.
I think the torque converter didn’t unlock
It wasn’t consistent sometimes it work fine like when I test drove it
The torque will achieve lockup and shift normally.
2. I was told to do a valve solenoid replacement and tranflush with filter (5/18)
I did that it helped a little the torque converter wouldn’t stall the SUV but would make it jerky while stopping but not consistent sometimes it work fine.)
The pan was fairly clean no chunks just a fine film of black and some black stuff on the magnet(looked like graphite).
3. New problem just starting today( 5/20)
A sound similar to two metal plates rubbing together while in reverse or drive (very audible).
When your speed reaches >2 miles per hour the noise goes away and returns as the speed decrees. The sound fades away rather than just stops. No noise in neutral or park. The noise will intensifies if I apply the brake and throttle at the same time not letting the SUV move. When the noise fades it sound like something is synchronizing to the same speed.
The torque converter seems to lockup normal at higher speeds.
I think it is a converter I just need to speed money on parts wisely. I hope someone can help. I sure this is old problem and links form the site on old post would be very helpful. Thanks

Does the trans OD light flash?

You could have an engine problem which would cause stalling, a sticking idle solenoid, not uncommon, also get some help from a couple people to listen to the scraping noise an be sure it is coming from the transmission. When you are sitting in the drivers seat it can be very hard to tell where a noise is coming from. I believe anything that someone suggests, would just be a guess. The point I am trying to make is that you may not have a transmission problem, and yes it could be the converter. Please post back if you find anything else that will help find the problem.

The OD light does turn on if you turn the OD off?

I'm sorry random, I thought all the v8's in explorers ran on 4r70w series trannies? Thought only v6's used the 4R and 5R's.

The 5.0 V8 s had the 4R70W. The 2002 up 4.6 V8s had the 5R55S trans.

idsledhead, search the forum for your problem, there is a search at the top of this forum. There may have been many people with the same problem, the trouble is not many people post back and say what fixed the problem, also they never come back to the forum after there problem is fixed.

I have read a lot of post just haven't came a cross anything sounding just like mine. I will keep doing my research, this forum is full useful info. I will defendantly keep the forum posted. It the least i can do with all the help it has provided and I do like the mod section. I might have to get the wife something else and build a off road beast like the ones posted here. Thanks

If you are sure that scraping noise is coming from the trans? Then as you originally thought , the problem is probably the torque converter.

Update 6/3/12
replaced the t/c and Solenoid Pack-the problems are fixed.
thanks for the help

Yep, you are not a newbie anymore. Thanks for posting back, glad you got the problem fixed.

Glad you fixed, it i was reading and it sounded like the problem i had at 50k
"two metal plates rubbing together while in reverse or drive" - I had that when shifting into 3rd, as a snap ring broke, destroyed the 3rd gear planetary set. Put it this way i didn't get out as cheap as you.
