Where is the fuel filter, I've been under there twice and can't find it. I think its under a guard on top of the tank but don't know how to get into it.

Welcome to this forum! It's near the side frame, not on the top of the tank. Just trace the fuel line, and you will find it.

It is hidden above a guard located approximately underneath the passenger side front seat immediately forward of the gas tank - not on top of the fuel tank. Can be easily reached from under the truck.

Me recommendation is to do this change out only when the vehicle is cold (no hot surfaces - for safety's sake, and preferably after it has sat for awhile - no fuel pressure to speak of.

Not a bad job, except that that getting the fuel line fittings requires a special (cheap) tool, and that the clips on the line fittings are a minor pain to unclip.
