Theres a 2005 Explorer in the auctions near me [UK]. I went and had a view and noticed a lot of changes compared with my 2001. Its a 4l V6 and its shows no oil pressure which I am sure is the sender as she runs smooth enough. Its probably an Australian import as Ford stopped sending any here in 2002
Question is are they an improvement over the model I have or as in most things are they just made cheaper. I notice she has coil springs now so did this make the handling better. Thanks Mark

I can say I am fairly satisfied with my 05. The whole suspension is different than the 2001 and older. Its a fully independent suspension, as compared to the live axle in the rear on the 2001 back model. Having both a 98 and 05, I do prefer the interior on the 98. Its more comfortable, and is about the same size interior as the 05. 05 has better handling, until you modify the suspension. 05 rides fairly rough compared to the 98. I would definately suggest looking into it, of course take it to a mechanic to have it checked out. Good luck with your choice

Double check things like the transmission, temp blend control knob and vent control knob for working right. Common problems in the 2005 models. The temp blend control knob isn't the problem per say, it's the actuator motor it is connected to. If you switch from cold to hot and hear a clicking or a thumping noise from behind the dash, it needs replacing. For the vent control knob, if you lose blower fan speed thru the vents, the air recirculation door has broken and is laying on top of the blower fan housing blocking air flow to the vents. Both of these have fixes or repair posts here on the forum, not that hard to do. Also, the rear fiberglass tailgate panels (the one with the Ford emblem on it) attached below the rear windows tends to get a vertical crack in it from stress of shutting the tailgate. Nice driving and looking vehicles, but with a bunch of nuisance issues in them. Good luck.

Thanks for the replies,I was too busy to go to the auction but it didn't sell so its still sat there, thats the 3rd week. I am in 2 minds whether to have a go at it or not. My main worry is parts as there are a lot of pre 2002 Explorers about but only a handful of later models.
