I keep finding references to a "200hp thread" when I do searches on worthwhile mods for my 93 X. But I can't find the thread itself! Anyone help me out?

As of now my only mod is a Dynomax Super Turbo muffler.

Maybe no one could find it? I searched, and I couldn't find it. Maybe that's not the title of it, or maybe you are drinking too much beer.

In my very limited experience, most of the guys with the OHV's that do every bolt-on mod, plus chip, end up pulling about 190 hp at the engine on a dyno. If you want more than that on a normally aspirated OHV, like the 200 hp you mention, you'll need to have head work or something like that done.

Never heard of it. A supercharger will get you there :D

I'd be happy with 190 hp...so does that mean the following: (in no particular order)

Less restrictive exhaust
headers
open cone intake
upgrade MAF for open cone
larger throttle body
computer chip
electric cooling fan

anything else?

Pretty much. Offhand I can't think of anything else. A guy on here did all of those mods with an OHV and dyno'ed about 189 horse on the engine. Of course, you have to do them RIGHT, which means get the right chip, get your chip dyno tuned, etc. You can't just stick on a JET chip and a 180 degree thermostat and think you've got a hot chipped setup.

add a cam to that list and I think you'll be very happy.

Not sure of I can go that far however, once the grill and radiator is removed getting at everything to that install should be ok. I've never done a cam before but I'm quite handy when it comes to working on cars (for anything new all I need is a procedure)

Is there a cam upgrade that can be done that doesn;t require higher roller rockers, change of lifters or change of pushrods?

Any cam, thats any different size, is going to require a different length pushrod. If your OHV is over +100,000 miles, then you probably want to consider new rockerarms/lifters/rings/timingset...

410 comp cam requires a pushrod length of 5.550" http://www.deltacam.com/ will make you a custom set of pushrods for this cam. www.pushrods.net will also...

a close to 200hp OHV is my goal one day, also

the 410 cam is a good choice because you can use the stock valvesprings. Also it doesn't require a lot of special tuning to get it to work well. Creager is right you must use those custom pushrods. You don't need to change anything with the rocker arms in our engines.....the pushrods are what account for the difference in valve lift. The cam swap is not hard....the haynes manual will tell you that you have to pull your heads off to do it but this is not true. See this link, it has some good pics and a good writeup: http://www.rangerpowersports.com/forum/showthread.php?t=88710

Honestly the hardest part is getting the radiator and stuff out of the way so you can pull the timing cover off and get to the cam. I had no experience with this kind of thing when I did mine. Put on a new timing chain and tensioner while you're in there too. Also make sure your engine is lined up at top dead center when you install it.

you're looking at a couple of hundred bucks for the cam and pushrods and believe me it is worth every penny....especially if you have headers and everything already. It will broaden your power band a lot and your motor will pull hard much higher up in the RPM range and you'll wonder why you didn't do it before. Don't be so concerned about peak power and torque as much as power and torque gains throughout the whole RPM range. Peak power and torque is good for bragging rights......but if you have a really broad flat torque band and a power band that doesn't fall off too fast....that is what is going to make the real difference in how the truck feels when you drive it.

My 93 has 75k miles on it, about 56k when I bought it last year :) I know all about nice flat torque curves, like my TA has :D

How much would the 410 cam hurt gas mileage, I'm trying to keep it somewhat reasonable. I know with the intake and headers it should get better if anything as long as I can keep my foot out of it ;)

so, do i have to find someone to do custom tunning here locally or is there a spot online i can tell them what i have done - and they program the chip for me?

Check out http://www.bamachips.com

Also, I've heard the 4.0 OHV has a lot to gain from porting and polishing the heads.

the heads won;'t be removed from the X sorry.

If i could only find the local guy here I met a few years ago ast the track. he had a 2wd ranger with a 4.0, ran mid to low 14s @4000+ ft above sea lvl. i asked him what he had done and he said the motor has never been out of the truck ever. he did tell me what he had done but i can't remember now...

if it was a silver 2 door ranger and his name was Trevor then he is on Ranger Power Sports a lot....user name Racin' Ranger. He put in a 422 cam, ported heads from a 95 4.0 (the 95 heads have smaller chambers which raise your compression to 10:1) and I think that may have been it. Of late he switched to an SDS ECU for tuning and has been using nitrous.

If that is who you met, then he's the guy to talk to. Nice guy....he made my upper intake too.

would you happen to know if he was in Calgary? cuz thats the track I met him at, and I think the ranger was either grey, silver or something like that.

It was an older model ranger...93 or older for sure

Does anyone make a cam gear drive for the 4.0?
