I am planning on adding a new stereo to my '95 XLT. Crutchfield says that I have a built in Amplifier and if desired that I can bypass it. I have never seen this amp. Could anyone help me and tell me where this Amp is?? All Crutchfield says is that "it's in the back". WHERE!!!??? Under the seats?? I don't see anything and I don't want to tear anything up looking for something that may not be there.

Thanks,

I am new here so forgive me if I posted in the wrong area. This seemed like the right place because I have not changed anything and my Explorer is stock.

Thank you all for your help.

It's behind the interior trim panel on the right side of the truck between the rear speaker and the tirewell hump.

BTW, welcome to the site.

If you decide to bypass without the harness (just unplug from the amp and join the cooresponding wires togther with solder) There is a great guide on which colors to match up. Search for the post called, "A Note About Bypassing the Factory Amp" It worked great with my 96 XLT.

Kewl,

Thanks ap81590. Checking into that now.

So it looks like I wire together those wires in the diagram AT THE AMP. (Just unplug it and wire 'em together) and when I install my new stereo, the output will go direct to the speakers and not the amp, then, right?

Sound like a no nonsense kind of approach. :D

Yep all this is right, if those are the right wire colors and considering our Explorers are 1 year apart I bet they would be. You have to remove all the right side paneling and get back there to the amp. Then I just cut the connecter off of both the plugs that go into the amp, matched up the wires and soldered them up. This was my first big undertaking with the Explorer and it took me about two hours. I do know how to do it now so ask me if you have any more questions.

I will probably install later this month. I still have to buy my stereo!! :P
It doesn't look too hard! I just hope the stuff from Crutchfield works properly.

Here is what their website says:

Installation Details for your 1995 Explorer

» Your vehicle is factory-equipped with a special sound system. You can either use a Crutchfield harness (free with most receivers) which will bypass your factory amplifier, or you can purchase an adapter that will allow you to continue to use your factory amplifier. If you use the Crutchfield bypass harness, you will need to run the included wires from the location of your new receiver to the location of your factory amplifier, which is in the rear of the vehicle.
OEM Amplifier Integration v.4 $39.99

If I wire it like we are discussing, will I need the harness that lets me 'continue to use my factory amp' because the wires will go back there, then back to the speakers, just like I had an amp??

Now what?? I am confused.

Qbeam

Nope and in fact it is suggested that you don't continue running the factory amp because most all head units have built-in amplifiers and double amping results in poorer sound...supposedly. Also if the colors match up, I would go ahead and just do it myself without Crutchfield's bypass. It may be harder but its not bad and you know it will work.

Allright, cool...

SO just buy it without the special adapter and install.
Unhook the amp and wire like we were saying.
Everything should be cool, right??

QBeam

As long as those colors are the same then everything is alright and if not, you'll just have to buy the bypass kit or find another color guide. These colors should be right though. Be careful, if I remember theres a blue wire w/ grey stripe and a grey wire w/ blue stripe so don't get confused

ok cool. thanks!!!!!

I will let you all know how it went when I get it all in.

what i did when i bypassed mine was when i pluged in the harness connected the two blue wires..and it works fine.

Does double amping it affect the sound quality at all? I read in a few places that this was a bad idea

uhh the quality gets a little worse and it cause more strain on the speakers.

hey, i own a 94 explorer limite edition. what are the specs of my stock amplifier and where is it? thanks in advance!

Does anybody know??? Help this guy out too.

I would THINK it would be in the same place as mine. I have no clue as to how many watts it would be. I would suppose 20 to 40 watts.
