2011 - 2018 Explorer Power Steering Issue

...Cory, can you explain why Ford wouldn't send the same information to its dealers who are genuinely trying to help their customers?...
Hey guys,

What we provide to the dealers is the information on how to fix it. The NHSTA’s investigation is public information available to anyone.

Well, I picked up my car on Saturday. Drives pretty normal. Not really expecting a problem for awhile. We shall see. Thanks to Cory and Jean...
You got it, mattgator. I’m happy to see your dealer took care of the concern.

Mattgator, could you tell me how long you waited for the Steering part & what state you are in...
I sent you a follow-up PM, EVERONWARD.

I'm in the Boston area and my dealer found a replacement rack at another dealer almost immediately...
This is great news, fargo1; thanks for posting the update.

Cory

Thanks
According to his info located in the left margin, he is located in Florida. His first post on this issue saying that he left it at the dealer was on August 27th and he said he picked it up on September 8th. This means it was at the dealership for 12 days.

I think I already know the answer to this, but I'm going to ask anyway. Is there anything proactive that can be done by the dealership to see if a given vehicle will have issues?

My wife is the one that usually drives our Explorer, usually with our 3yo and 9mo in tow. She isn't going to have the upper body strength to manhandle the vehicle to safe stop if she's in a corner. Frankly, this has me seriously worried about he safety of our vehicle.

Your own answer is likey 'NO'. If it is, I would think you are probably right. Although Ford has has corrected several problems on the factory line, it seems that they still are not willing to say that there is a potential hazard with the racks produced for the 2011 and some 2012 models. I too would be concerned if I was in your position but being single and the only driver, I hope that I will be able to manage the situation should it arise.
Good luck.

Cory, When do you think Watertown Ford will be getting the steering part. If you really are a Ford Rep and Really trying to help Ford Car Owners, they would have had the part by now.

He's doing all he can with what power he has. He doesn't own Ford.

EVERONWARD, I don't think that is a fair statement or assessment of the situation. The Ford reps are here to help the owners in an attempt to get certain bits of info and to bring problems to the attention of the area customer service reps and hopefully have them addressed in a timely manner. They do not control inventory, shipping, manufacturing etc.
As I've mentioned before, due to cost factors, I don't think that Ford or any vehicle manufacturer has vast amounts of stock built up in these major parts.
I think the majority of these parts are manufactured as the vehicle orders come in. I don't know what it would take or the process involved to concentrate of the manufacturing of a certain item (steering rack) only.
I appreciate the frustration you and others must be feeling and hope that this whole situation is taken care off quickly and permanently.

Just because Cory is a CS rep, doesnt mean Cory can magically make one apear out of thin air when they are backordered till November. If he could do it for you, he would do it for everyone.

Cory has helped many of us out (3-4 times with myself) many of times. Give him a break with the attitude.

I share everyone's frustration... my vehicle has been nothing but one problem after another since I bought it. I bought an American car for the first time in 30 years because I kept reading that the quality gap had been closed. Not so much. More disturbing, however, is the company's intentional effort downplay such a serious problem. I understand that it's a dollars and cents game -- but even then, you have to get the numbers right.

I'm sure that Ford has a battery of well-compensated analysts who have concluded that it's in the company's interest to pretend that this is not a big deal. If, in fact, the failure rate was 2.5 per thousand vehicles, they would probably be correct (to pretend). They will soon discover that this is not correct. Moreover, someone will get hurt, and the negative publicity will snowball. Compounding matters will a clear pattern of obfuscation and denial that will reflect very poorly on the company. The quality control problem evidently extends beyond manufacturing to management.

Having said all that, I think Cory is doing everything he can to help on this forum. Assuming he's rational and would like to keep his job, he has to be unwaveringly helpful and upbeat -- which can sound discordant when his comments are interleaved with emotional rants (such as my own) from customers fearful that their defective cars are trying to kill them. I welcome his presence here.

BTW, I got my car back after 11 days in the shop yesterday... the steering rack has been replaced and I made it home in one piece! Then MFT failed as my wife backed out of the driveway this morning. The beat goes on...

.....Although Cory has "helped" many of you by expediting a "fix" to your problem there is still no guarantee your steering will fail again and your family will meet it's end in a fiery crash. Cory could you please post the contact information of the highest level of customer service at Ford so I can contact them about my experience? Could you include an email address and mailing address so everyone here can as well? Also, I was curious how do people who have died in their explorer file a report with the NHTSA?
I assume and hope that you meant "there is still no guarantee your steering won't fail again". Relatives and/or survivors have been known to file lawsuits/reports after certain serious incidents.
I think it would also likely be beneficial to speak to someone higher up at the NHTSA.

Peter

Ford has identified the issue in the steering racks as a manufacturing defect and taken steps to resolve the issue. You would know that if you had read Ford's response to the issue. The link is posted elsewhere in this thread.

As far as a guarantee that the new racks fix the issue? Not sure what you are expecting here from Ford. They have admitted there is a defect and made the necessary corrections....

This is little comfort to me. We, thankfully, haven't had a problem yet. But what if we do? What if my wife is driving with my two young daughters when it happens? She won't be able to manhandle the Explorer around a curve. Our Explorer was built before the manufacturing processes were fixed. Ford needs to suck it up and issue a recall on the affected vehicles.

I also have an early 2011 build and feel a recall is in order. Having said that, how can Ford be expected to replace the steering racks in 1000's of Explorers when they are having problems right now trying to supply the parts to fix those that have had the failure? Perhaps they can slowly build up a supply of 'racks' but I wouldn't hold my breath. Ford has replied that there is no serious problem. I think it is only a matter of time before there will be a serious injury or God forbid, a fatality due to this issue. Keep in mind that most of the early build owners are likely not members of a forum and are unaware this sudden loss of steering issue.

My power steering just went out today when I was backing out of the garage. The warning lite came on and I could not turn the wheel. I have a early 2011 explorer limited. This has never happened before. I am worried about it, and now seeing all of these post I don't know if I should let my wife drive it while I am gone this weekend. I have read many but not all of the the comments here and it seem there is no sure fix. If I am wrong could someone please let me know. thanks

Anyways.....
Our explorer has been in the shop since 8/30/12 awaiting a new rack. My case has been escalated by Cory (thanks!) and a CSM named Kim has contacted me to introduce herself and to say that she has placed an emergency order for a new rack.
As far as a loaner/rental car goes, I've been told that I'm just sh@t out if luck because I dont have an extended warranty. The clowns at the dealer told me to call ford to see what they could do, ford tells me to call Kim, Kim won't return my calls and when she does, she says that it's up to dealer to provide a loaner. Wtf!?!
Just this week the dealer finally told me what I've read in this forum all along, that it's back ordered until 11/19/12. So according to the dealer, Kim and Ford I'm to do without a car until freaking November.
I think after this is all over I'll trade the POS in and go foreign.

Long time Ford customer until 2012,
Chris
