2012 Mustang Rims on 4th Gen. Done!

After just a little over 2 years of having this truck the Dunlops, which were New went bad...and I mean really bad!! They are dated made in 2010, but have cracks all through the tread, and 2 of the 4 have come a part inside and started to bubble on the tread. This has made the truck pull to the right horribly, and I'm pretty sure took out the rack and pinion. In fact I was replacing the R&P when I came across the real issue.

Which leads us to today.. With the tires out of commission, truck wasn't going any where till I replaced them. Since I don't have $600-$800 for tires, I turned to craigslist. I was looking for take offs as I could buy them cheap, and then sell my current wheels. This is what I found.

2012 Ford Mustang V6 17" Wheels. With 215/65/17 Michillens that were on the Mustang for 3 months for Under $400

Bolted right on, no issues. Only thing I have to do is pull the sensors from my old wheels and install them on these new ones. Tires are about 1/2" sorter but will work for now.

The Mustang wheels use the same blue sensors as the Explorer does.
So no need to change them. You only have to reprogram them to work with your Explorer.

Well two thing here...

1. I was told the sensors after 2010 are different and mount with the valve stem, which it does look like these wheels have them from the outside. ( I read they have a shoulder). I read they are not compatible with the older system too.

2. The guy said he had the bands removed so he could put them on the new wheels. But they don't have bands? (Point 1) :scratch: So confused!

I don't know how to tell if they do have them until I go have one pulled apart. Also do I make sure to pull my old sensors? So I can put them on these later..

OK OK raptors are heavy! He has 6 of them crawl inside (which pre loads the suspention) thus lowering it just enough to clear the door! Happy now? Lol
Oh and once he let's them out..... the chase is on!

Really guys I just drive JP in. We built it with the intention of being able to fit in a normal garage and some mall parking garages (living in LA and all) She is 6' 6" aired up on 37's. The roof rack brackets rub on the door sometimes going in and out of the garage. I have a quick plug in for the light bar so it can come on and off pretty quick.

So with that solved...back to the reason for the thread

I couldn't help washing it last night after I test drove it.

yeah it does look a little funny, but being broke and needing tires this was the cheapest route. They are 1" smaller then stock. It will stay like this till we get rid of it or I replace the tires again, which should have way more availability with 17's. If that happens I'll probably go to a 235 or 245 Should also pick up some MPG with these too

It does prove that Mustang rims are a direct bolt on option for us 4th gen guys

The wheels look good, as does the rest of the Explorer. How's the ride, handling, noise, etc. of the included tires compared to the old tires?

even at 40psi (max of 44psi) the new tires ride like glass! Very smooth. New tires are Michelin Energy Saver All Seasons. I didn't really care for the Dunlops that we're on there.

With a smaller tire with low rolling resistant, it defiantly feels peppier. In fact we joke that it thinks it's a Mustang now, because it have the motor and the wheels from one now..lol

I definitely like the Mustang wheels on your Explorer.. Better than I thought. Now that I know they will fit with no issues. I'm going to search for the wheels that look like BBS wheels and hopefully get a set of those.

So how did this affect your fuel mileage? They probably have less rolling resistance than your stockers but because the overall diameter is smaller your engine will be turning more RPMs at any given MPH. Probably uses more gas, right? The trade-off is, as you mentioned, better acceleration since you have effectively changed the gear ratio. Kind of like replacing 3.55's with 3.73's.
