2016 Explorer Throttle Body Problems

Well, I am new to the forum and have just experienced the "Throttle Body" issue. Not sure what to expect once it is "fixed". Hopefully it doesn't take 2 - 4 weeks for the part to arrive.

Welcome to the Forum.:wavey:
The 2016 models seem to be plagued with throttle body and squealing cooling fans. As mentioned in posts above, the throttle body is a redesigned one compared to ones used in previous years. It hasn't been mentioned whether the replacements are the identical ones or modified like the replacement fan motors have. Checking the trim levels in the margins of this thread, it doesn't appear any vehicles with the Ecoboost have been affected.

Peter

After going through the margins of the thread, did you get an idea of about how many 2016 owners have been affected?
Curious if this is an issue of a string of a few (less than 1%) bad parts or actually a poor design that affects all.
If Ford Customer Service is watching this thread.... any comment?

Basefan

Note: May be answering my own question... It looks like about 5 mentioned in this thread with noting a dealer saying about 5 more... Also they all seem to be purchased/leased from December to April... I did not see any before then... Curious, as if a batch of bad units hit the line in December 2015...

Well, I'm officially part of this issue too.
I have the squealing fan and now this.

2016 XLT V6 with maybe 11000 miles

Also worth to metion that XLT models appear to me more affected, followed by Limited and Sport trims, based on members here.

........
Since this thread is strictly for the 2016 models, it would be safe to assume that all posts complaining about having the issue are by 2016 owners. ;)

Not sure if I can post this, if not please remove, but I have found a site where others have had this problem

http://www.carcomplaints.com/Ford/Explorer/2016/engine/vehicle_speed_control.shtml

I'm just curious to know if anyone has heard/talked to their dealership about the EBT arrival. I had a "chat" session with someone from Fords 'Service Dept." and asked if the EBT was an issue with the 2016 Explorers and they said that they do not have anything on file. I followed that up with "can you explain why the part is 2 -4 weeks back ordered? The term back ordered to me means that the part is in high demand"......crickets........ but they did start a case file and told me that a Service Rep. would contact me in 1 -3 business days. We shall see what happens from there.

So far so good since the TB was replace as mine was installed on Wed 5/11, driven by dealer (testing) that day and 5/12 no issues. I picked it up 5/13 and have driven city/freeway hard to normal driving and doing well.

As to XLT or such, think of the sales .. probably selling more XLT models due to pricing so you will probably see more from that trim as more units are on the road.

Looks like 10K miles is the point of failure.

Sorry, I wasn't clear... When I said how many 2016 owners affected, I meant how many 2016 owners had the issues out of how many 2016 sold... Like has there been about 200 issues out of 200000 vehicles sold. Even when I include about 11 listed here and about 15 at car complaints... that is less than 30 issues. I also understand there could be a bunch that never get reported online. I can't base anything on the backlog of parts as they seem to have a backlog on many parts for the 2016 models... probably because of the number of "new" parts and that the vehicle is so popular they can't make them fast enough.

Just trying to get a handle on whether this is an issue on less than .01% of a very popular model or if this is a real design issue.

If you have this issue I recommend you go to NHTSA.gov and file a complaint.

I did file a couple of days ago and spoke to a rep in DC today. They only had 12 complaints as of this afternoon. Get some more complaints so it can trigger an investigation.

This issue definitely falls under a recall requirement, as the vehicle is rendered inoperable when the error comes occur.

Well, it looks like Ford came through and had a EBT expidited for my XLT. It came in on Tuesday 5-24-16, it was installed and picked it up same day. Either Ford is looking the other way about this issue or doesn't want to believe this is a MAJOR issue. As I was picking up my XLT, there were 4 law enforcement officers there to pick up their Explorers for the same issue.
Please file your complaints with the NTHSA..(I did a couple of days after mine went down)... something has to be done about this before someone gets seriously injured.

I'm guessing that EBT is the throttle body (TB)?
I don't think Ford is looking the other way. Apparently the TB in the 2016 is unlike the ones in previous model years. It was redesigned. I just think they (Ford) was caught unaware of the problem and the scope of it. The fact that they expedited your delivery and some others are receiving the parts much sooner than expected seems to show that this matter is being taken seriously IMO.

I guess when they issue a recall because of the Throttle Body, then we know they are serious. Until then, the jury is still out for me.

Another throttle body and back order!

Hello all!

2016 Ford Explorer XLT V6 5,000 miles

I'm glad I found this forum to discuss this. My wife had the same problem on 5/18/16. She called and had the Explorer towed to the dealer and they had no idea what was wrong with it. It took them 3 days to diagnose it and now tell me that the throttle body is the problem and is on back order until early June.

My wife also said that a few times the car would hesitate over the past 3-4 months but I'm not sure if that was her imagining things or the ETB was the cause.

If anyone has had their units changed out, please report back if you have any problems. My wife drives this car mostly.

Also, would anyone recommend a complaint to give Ford? My wife is furious that we are leasing this and we get stuck with an old loaner from the dealer for 2-3 weeks.

Check out post 42 for a "report back".
Posts 41 and 45 have links that you should use to report your issue.
Good luck.

mine has been fixed!
Will pick it up today.
took from 13MAY to 24 MAY.

The real test begins, we hit the road soon and will be in some remote areas in New Mexico on the trip... crossing fingers/toes and anything else that this is a once and done issue. But in all seriousness, still humming along just as it should.

I have a 2016 Limited with 6k miles and had the orange wrench of death in the middle of my six hour drive home from vacation. I was towed into a dealership late Friday night and was told today (Monday) that the Throttle Body would take 3 weeks to come in. Ford service team has been very helpful and candid about the problem, they gave me a nice loaner car and the service managers are doing all they can to help out with the problem and get my car closer to home. They have said that this is turning into a major problem with the 2016 Explorers and the problem is happening all over the country that is why there is a 3-4 week back order of the Throttle Body part. I appreciate their honesty and willingness to help out until it gets fixed.

As indicated earlier in this thread, the throttle body in the 2016 is apparently not the same one used in previous model years. Good luck.
