2017 explorer xlt
I have a 2017 explorer xlt that I bought in 2020, I've had zero problems with it up until a couple of months ago. When shifting out of park into reverse or drive it's like it's in a bind and will 'slam' into gear. It doesn't do it every time, but it has become more frequent and it's sluggish shifting into 2nd but only after it hasn't been driven for 5 or 6 hours.
When I went in for my scheduled maintenance about 3 weeks ago I told them about it and they really didn't seem that concerned and said they would set me up an appointment for diagnostic, which they haven't done yet. Just curious if anyone else experienced this

This exact same thing is happening with my 18. I need to make an appointment to get it checked.

I just emailed my service advisor for an appointment.

I just backed my car up a bit and the clunk in reverse was so loud I thought I hit something.

For me, when it shifts into 3rd (about 30 mph) it lunges me forward in my seat, there are also issues on the highway at about 60-63.

If you have the 3.5L with 6F50/55 you can check the transmission dipstick underneath the air filter box.

Noises/lunging never good and more than likely a rebuild/replacement may be in order. Ive seen others post about similar clunking noises that came from the PTU

Mine is a 2.3L.

We have a 2017 XLT with the 2.3 EB. I've changed the fluid 4 times in 77,000 miles. It shifts fine. There was a recall to reprogram the transmission shifting to help with the torque convertor. It's suppose to help keep the transmission from abrupt shifts and banging/clanking. We had the recall done but for us it made no difference because we didn't have any shifting issues, maybe changing the fluid frequently helped. Maybe you want to check on that recall and see if it applies to your vehicle.

Car went to the dealer yesterday. Should know in a few days what's going on.

I have never changed the trans fluid and neither has the dealer.

I have an update. They were waiting for approval from Ford for a new transmission or to overhaul it.

Ford decided to overhaul it. Not sure exactly what that means, but there definitely was something major happening.

I should get it back next week.

I am so glad I took it in.

They cover this under the warranty or recall?

It was all covered under warranty. I'm glad that I have it.

It drives like a new car. It feels and shifts much better.

There were no codes with the trans diagnosis and no codes with IDS. Then they pulled the transmission out and put it on the bench.

From the invoice : "There was scoring in main control bores and in solenoid body. Direct clutches were burnt and overdrive piston scored. Low reverse piston failed. Trans fluid was burnt and black in color."

Did they happen to share the costs? Just curious what a full rebuild like that would cost without warranty 😂

The invoice was all N/C.

I will ask though to see. Now I’m curious.

That is common for warranty repairs.
Yep. Same on my invoice when I got the hood replaced on my PIU. Looking at the other paperwork, it cost almost $3,000.
