2017 Oil Pan leak

Yup thats what the SA said. I dont know what to believe. How is filling up the engine with oil fixing the issue? I am not convinced of the fix but I can go pick it up tomorrow. Not very confident with the dealerships abilities to fix the issue :(

I tend to agree with Nasty:

So the engine was clattering, etc running on half a quart of oil and now it's just okay, no issues?

I can see how they can say the fixed the leak, I'm sure they replaced the oil filter and put new oil into the engine, its what's known as an oil and filter change. But I'm really struggling with how they or anyone can tell you that the engine is perfectly fine after running on less than a quart of oil? I have no idea how long or hard you ran the engine low on oil, but if it was for 500 or a thousand miles, probably not good for the long term life of the engine.

I also struggle with the slit in the oil filter. It sure seems like there would have been some sign of collateral damage elsewhere if something would have hit it and caused the slit while driving.

Is this AWD and does it have the air deflector for the PTU that runs under the oil filter?

Actually the air scoop/deflector runs under the oil drain plug and has to be removed to get to it. The oil filter sits in front of the oil pan and is easily accessible. However as tucked up into the engine block as it is it would not seem to be exposed enough to be damaged from road debris.

Picked up the car today from the dealership. They charged for a diagnostic test that I had to pay and then they changed the oil which they also charged. The dealership gives the first oil charge free for new cars. So I had that taken care of.

My wife was driving her 2017 explorer today and also noticed a "hot smell", her father crawled under the car when she got the their place and sure enough it was leaking oil. I'll be taking it to the dealer this weekend. we have only had the car for 3 weeks (we bought it used at 10000 miles so it's still under warranty). we'll see how it gets fixed

The wife seems pretty happy judging by the smile in the picture you posted in the other thread.:)

she sure is...or was, now the car is still in the shop so she's not so happy, she wants her truck back! apparently there is a leak coming from the transmission, possible a seal. it's going to be another few days. :(

I have the same thing going on with our 2017 Explorer with the 3.5. Pukes about 2.5 quarts seemingly at once. There will be no oil spots in driveway and then while driving it the smell and smoke appear as oil sprayed the length of the undercarriage and coats the back of the car from air turbulence. Dash light comes on and it is about 2.5 qts low.

Has happened twice now. After the second filter and oil change at about 16K it took an oil dump. I thought it was a fluke with maybe a bad oil filter gasket (even though it looked fine) since the filter is where it seemed to come from. It happened again this week about 6k miles since the oil change at the last puking, (now at 22k miles). I studied the filter closely and it looks fine, and was firmly tight when i removed it. I think it is coming from above the filter but haven't pinpointed it yet. Motorcraft filters (hand tight), synth oil are being used. I had checked oil level two weeks ago when i changed the oil in one of the other vehicles and the level was fine.

I am stopping by the dealer today and am prepared for the blank - "if it isn't spouting oil now we can't figure it out" stare. I am hoping there is some TSB I haven't located yet.

Just found this post via google. We have a 2017 that is now leaking after our first dealer oil change. It has about 23k on it. Never leaked until after the oil change. Took it back about 1 month ago for this issue and it is doing it again. I called for to ask what they did to fix it last time and they said nothing was documented. They do show it was in their shop.? We have an appt in three days lets see what they say this time. I ran the vehicle for 5 mins and this was on the ground see pics.

Welcome to the Forum Jay,
Are you sure it isn't a leak from the filter seal? I don't see why the oil pan would begin to leak after an oil and filter change. Keep us posted please.

That was my thought as well. The oil pan looks dry. Maybe the filter gasket isnt sealing or the old gasket was stuck to the engine(now you have 2 gaskets).

Take the filter off and inspect the threads, mating area for any damage or abnormalities. Also check the filter to see if anything is wrong. I have had motorcraft filters do that to me before. I have switched to a (IMO) better filter, either Mobil 1 or Napa Platinum, both are synthetic filters for extended oil changes. I would try this as something cheap and quick before running it back and forth to the dealer. Good luck.

Hi fellow Explorer owners. Just joined the group but am on Explorer #6 since 1990! But this leads to my problem. I have a new 2017 XLT V6 with less than 3000 miles. A few weeks ago started noticing a hot smell different than the typical new car smell. Long story short leaking oil pan seal that was fixed by my selling dealer. Less than 500 miles (and 7 days) later it is back at the dealer leaking again. Anyone experienced this or do I have a potential lemon. In the hundreds of thousands of miles put on my other Explorers I have never had an event like this. Anyone else seen/heard/had this happen?

Thanks for the info!

Hi everyone. Just joined the forum. Yes, We have a very similar problem. This is our 4th Explorer. Bought a new 2017 Explorer XLT V6 in June 2017. In less that 3,000 miles also, it started leaking oil on the garage floor. The dealer said it was a crack in the oil pan. So he put silicone on the crack!!! It is now leaking again with less than 9,000 miles on it. Will be taking it to the dealer again. They need to repair or replace the faulty part. A brand new car should not have a crack in the oil pan. Sure hope this is not going to be an example of the Ford quality we depend on. Looks like Ford has an issue with the oil pan.

Hope we can get this resolved.

I think that I would take it to another dealer if all they did was to put some silicone onto the crack and called it good. On a warranty issue they should of replaced the oil pan.

There doesn't seem to be any indication that Ford has an issue with the oil pan. There was apparently a problem with a gasket with Brentda1's Explorer but yours actually is the only one that has reported a crack in the oil pan. As JAPeterson replied above, the oil pan should have been replaced under warranty. You should have that taken care of right away in my opinion.

Took the Explorer back to the dealer again. This time he put a dye in the engine oil to see where it was leaking. Different place this time. The engine rear main seal. Then needed to drop the transmission from the engine and replace the seal. Have it back now. We'll see if there are any more leaks or issues. I sure hope not.
