2020 Explorer brake issue

Post number 113 has been selected as best answered.

Called the dealer today to schedule. I told them what was wrong and the service advisor told me, "if it's a repeated problem, then bring it in. Chances are it's a glitch that happens on newer vehicles".

I was a bit stumped. I didn't know what to say. Because i would like to bring the car in but then i know i have to pay for a rental (they said they have to approve loaners to customers with cars that are actually being worked on, not just "checked"). So i would have to pay a rental @ 30 bucks a day for who knows how long, and who knows. Maybe a week later they'll say they can't replicate the problem and i take the car back with nothing done.

Also there are no recalls for my VIN. So a bit happy about that.

I took the truck today to work. It's like nothing happened. No CEL. No chimes, nothing.

Could it be an electrical glitch?

There is a software update that is supposed to fix this. It isnt a recall, it is a tab. Your dealer can look the TSB up. It is also posted in the TSB thread on the forum.

I suggest you find a new dealer for warranty service, and in the meantime spend 10 minutes and add to the growing list of brake complaints on the NHTSA Website.

HTH & Good Luck!
The dealer's response seems quite reasonable to me. Ford does not allow for loaners/rentals. That is clearly spelled out in the Warranty Guide. Any such vehicle made available to a customer is at the dealer's expense so I can understand why they don't provide them for every customer who wants something "checked". I'm not even sure if an ESP with first-day rental coverage would cover it for just having the vehicle checked out.

My build date didn't fall under those TSB's though. I even had the dealer run my VIN for any current recall. He said there is none at the moment. I know i could just bring the truck in. But for paying for a rental since they won't offer a loaner @ 30 bucks a day, for who knows how long, for a possibility they won't replicate the issue to fix it, to give the truck back to me after 1 or 2 weeks, isn't really motivating.

Past 2 days truck has been perfect though. As if nothing is wrong. Wouldn't there be a CEL if there was a slew of warning indicators like that though?

I had a similar issue last year with my wrx. Parked the wrx for one weekend, monday morning i was greeted with chimes, indicator lights. Found out some rodent or a rat got in the engine bay and chewed some wires. Brought it to a subaru dealer (not the subaru dealer i got the car from) and they gave me a loaner that morning. With free EZ-pass too lol. It was pretty good customer service i would admit.

But i brought the car in because something was definitely wrong. And they knew when they got it.

I think ford wouldn't give out loaners unless they know the car HAS TO BE worked on. Not a car brought in to be checked, you're right about that.

Happened again today during my lunch break. About 110 miles since the first incident.

I think the only connection i have with this issue is both times i used the remote to start the car. Not the app. Idk if there's an actual difference between starting with the remote and using your phone, aside from the stated obvious lol.

I was sitting in the car with it idling because i was on the phone. And it was pretty cold. About 31 degrees and raining. The car was idling for about 30 minutes (the temp gauge only had 2 bars haha) and again i was startled by the chimes and all the indicators again. Same thing. "check brake system", collision assist not available etc etc. The same thing from last week. I shut the car off, opened my door so everything turns off, waited about 20 seconds, restarted the car and everything back to normal again.

I think i got an electrical gremlin but honestly if this only happens when the car is parked idling, i really don't care. Because i'll just shut the engine off and restart it. But i don't even want to think if i'm on the highway going 70 and then this happens, that means no brakes.

I swear if this happens, i'm suing ford. You guys will see a rich person in me when the lawsuit is over haha

I have a different braking issue. Just bought a 2020 ST 10 days ago, it was a re-acquire. This issue was not mentioned on the buy back. As I'm backing up, probably less than 3mph, my reverse sensor starts flashing like I'm inches from an object. It then jams the brakes on & comes to an startling halt. Happened to me last night & my.wife tonight.
Calling dealer asap tomorrow morning!

2 reasons, either the sensor is blocked (which I am pretty sure you would have already checked and eliminated as a problem) or it is not working as it should which would require sensor replacement

They also get calibrated. It doesn’t necessarily need replaced.

Will the dealer do those ABS module reprograms by request, or do they have to replicate them? Both are exactly the issues I experienced in the past.

Welcome to the Forum.
Perhaps you just discovered why it was a Buyback. Please keep the members updated. Thanks.

I actually got it back tonight from spending 8.days back at the dealer for repairs. Turns out the same issue it was re-aquired for happened to me. Flashing exterior lights, keyless entry didn't work, car wouldn't start. Called for a jump bit that didn't work. Ford dealership replaced the BCM(body control module) & they also said that "should" clear up the back sensor/rear brake assist issue I had. Tested in reverse a few times tonight & so far works lime a charm.

Well I finally got mine to the dealer for the hard brake at startup issue. Had them perform the TSB 49011 and all is well so far. The dealer was familiar with the TSB (was a master tech). Hopefully it never happens again. Will re-post if the issue recurs.
