Creager, sometimes I definately would not mind having more power than what the 4.0L OHV provides. Mine is all stock for the moment, am considering a dynomax cat-back exhaust finished off with a 3" tip and 21/4" piping. May also put a cold air on as well but am still debating on that one, as the gains in HP are minimal and intakes aren't cheap :thumbdwn: I basically just want the X to have a bit more of an authoratative sound when getting on the gas, but mellow at cruise. One thing that might help me is that I never rev the engine over 3K, unless it is absolutely necessary. I think that it has seen 4K twice since I've owned it :)

Flowmaster 40-series muffler sounds great

66mm BBK throttlebody will give you a noticable 5% more power

The KKN filter definatly makes a difference in sound.

Your right, power does not come cheap on these engines. You gotta dig internally to wake up the sleepy 4.0.

I hate you....on my last tank of gas i got 12.5MPG

Not sure if a 40 series would be too loud or not for my tastes. I know that on the flowmaster's the lower the number the louder it is. I would have to hear one to know whether or not I would like it. :) Creager, I agree, without tearing the engine down and shaving the heads, port and polish, etc., it is hard to get any real worthwhile HP gains. Besides, I like the idea of getting 26mpg out of the X every now and again! :D
Christobal65, sorry  ;) :)

I have a Dynomax super turbo muffler and a K&N cone with an adapter from ebay. The adapter is greatly machined piece. Even the fellas at the parts store where I got the K&N admired it.

Designed for the 4.0 OHV - nice sound at WOT. My exhuast is fairly mellow, I know the sound of my truck when I hear the wife coming down the road, but its not loud at all.

haha I got 13.8 mpg, but I don't hate you 93TwoToneXLT
You need to talk like the old commercial, "Don't hate me because I got 26.5 mpg"

Ive only seen about 22mpg max, highway driving of course but we have the truck loaded with camping gear as well as a car top carrier full too and 4 passengers lol.

Ive never seen that gas mileage since.. i have that lead foot problem too.

Also random question, what colors is your explorer?

Lol Rhett I was thinking the same thing! Brandons, the truck is dark grey on the hood, roof, and tops of the doors and liftgate, with the rest of the truck navy blue. As soon as I get a digital camera I will have some pics posted on my profile. :) However, I am going to be painting the truck in the near future. It will be one tone and be the denim blue color that you see on the Eddie Bauer X's and Expeditions. Guess that I will have to change my name at that time. HaHa

Hehe sounds good :D I dont plan to ever change the colours on mine (green top, light brown bottom) but i will be cutting out under the doors and welding some square tubing in, i plan on getting some tubing very soon. When i get the body fixed up (rocker panels is it?) im going to herculine underneath, already have it sitting on my shelf just waiting for some good weather and time, as well as a new grinder attachment and so on.

Brandon's, luckily, with it being a SC truck from new I don't have any probs with rust. The bottom of the truck(frame, etc.) doesn't have a spot of rust anywhere. Unfortunately the clear coat has left the truck in spots(mainly on the rear liftgate, some on the pass side rear qtr too) so I am biting the bullet and painting it. I have a friend who is a very good painter and he is going to paint the truck since I bought him a really nice Sata paint gun. So, for the price of the gun($500) and paint I am getting a professional paint job. :D All I have to do is help him with some of the prep work, but that's cool as it gives us an excuse to drink beer and bulls**t :)

Thats awsome. Hope it looks real good :D

I found out some information on what im looking for, 12 feet of square tubing is about $20 which ill need two of them for what im doing :D

(You probably need to add that 2nd washer in front of your radius arm bushings. It does wonders for that 65-70 mph shake you have there. )

Thats the best news I have heard in a long time. Thanks.

Well don't take it as gospel...it's worked on the two TTB vehicles I used it on...and yet on my truck, I never needed to use two washers. There are a lot of variables with the shake...

Since I corrected my speedo, my milage went to a wopping 12mpg from 10. All high speed high RPM, gunning it type use. I have yet to test it on a normal HW trip. I'm driving to NYC & back in July so I'll know then.

I can somwhow relate to the amazing mpg's you get sometimes. My wife and I make the same 2.5 hour trip up the west virginia mountains art least 4 times a year. Sometimes we go up there and back on a tank of gas. Most of the time we have to fill up again shortly after heading home. Explorers seem to be very inconsistant

Latest trip, to Tacoma, WA on 04-02-06 from Vancouver, WA trip was 305 miles (round trip), day time w/ dry weather.

I have a (first gen) '94 FORD Explorer with 4.0L ohv, 4x4, 4dr, auto trans, 3.27 gears, and P235/75R15 tires (34 psi), no modifications at all. It has 140K on the odometer. I use regular Dino oil and reg. unleaded gas. Myself and my wife were in the vehicle w/ very little else.

This trip I got 20.4095 MPG. Gas cost $2.479 per gallon in WA, total trip cost was $37.05 in gas.

Aloha, Mark

Cool  I am hoping to average that on the hwy. Like I said in a previous post, I think that this was a one time fluke, and since I took a trip to Columbia, SC and averaged 19 mpg with the A/C on for most of the trip, with about 20 miles of city driving thrown in there. So I think that this is what I can expect most of the time.

My last tank I was going to get over 500 kms on the tank. Mostly highway but with some city driving. HIghway cruising was no less than 120kph.

Filled up with 490 on the clock with 1/8 tank left. I noticed a large difference once I cleaned my MAF and installed a K&N cone filter.

Was there a hurricane blowing from behind???? OMG I can only hope that after I get my xlt tuned up and cleaned etc... it will get anywhere near that. Right now I am at about 12-14 mpg and cursing at the gas pump, which I visit regularly.
