2nd Gen 5.0L Performance Mod List

The 351W is a bit taller and wider and the 302 is already tight in there................

Ok, for a change in pace and to entertain and educate the less informed here (namely me) can you more experienced people here tell me why this:

"351W:
Not happening without an automotive engineering degree and a truck load of money."

is true? Size? design? what?

The taller engine makes a custom oil pan necessary to clear the oil pump pickup, crossmember and front differential.

The exhaust ports are higher so custom exhaust manifold will also be needed, ( although the added height will probably make header fabrication easier)

The upper intake would probably need to be changed because the lower intake will be wider, I don't know if there is a lower 351 intake that will accept the explorer upper.

Cam sensor needs to be taller. I suppose one could be made from a 351 distributor though.

Harmonic balancer and flex plate.

Fitting the explorer front dress accessories and brackets might be a hassle also since the brackets bolt to the heads , making them higher with more spread.

Did I miss anything?

Nope... Seems like enough reasons to me. thank you.

Not to mention you might also run into clearance problems with the valve cover to heater box. As mentioned with the pan a 302 will not work at all. The block it wider at the bottom and the mains are larger. I remember a while back someone was trying to put one in, and I think they were trying to use a 3.8 sensor and a 5L cam sensor but the build stopped. I do however remember someone jamming a 351C into one of these things. It was also carbed however.

93'-95' 351W Lighting lower is a gt40. he explorer upper will bolt right to it.

Problem is, if and when you do find one they want ridiculous money for it, like twice as much than a new Trickflow 351R intake.

A Cleveland? Wow... I have a strange belief that when you have to start cutting major sheet metal and make major mods to chassis components to get an engine on you are no longer "modifying" a vehicle but building a new one. Though I am a huge fan of the clevelands.
Well... Guess I'd better start working on that automotive engineering degree. Hehe

I seen a craigslist ad once that had a 351c/c6 combo 4x4 but all they did was put a 2nd gen body on top of an older (70's f150 maybe?) frame. The body was lifted up quite a bit too as I remember.

Yea the F-150 lightning 351 was what I was thinking of when I asked about the 351... Now gotta find a salvage lightning that the owners don't know what a lightning is...

I’ll have to do some digging later. It was a white 2nd Gen he painted the block either red or orange, and the guy was from Australia if I remember correctly. I didn’t believe him either until he posted a picture up, and there it was. Was able to tell by the front of the block that houses the timing chain, and coffee table intake

I didn't see that one!

GAH! i know its here! i cant find it!!!! even looked on the facebook page!!! oh well, disregard what i said, and move on...

So what is the best way to add HP & better sound?
I want to either, run straight pipes exhaust from engine, or add a flowmaster (with or without cat)

The BEST way to add power is to reduce weight.

Yes I know that part. Strip it down to nothing but seat, steering wheel, frame, tires, engine! :D
Don't help with my amp/subs and tools for weight. Adds a good 50lbs
I have taken out ALLOT to reduce weight, but that's pretty much all I have in it
But as far as my suggestions?

Sell it never happen with a frod

2nd best way to make power: BOOST! Turbo or supercharger. Cant say which is better, both have pro's and con's, all depends on your application, budget, driving style.

What about NOS?

NOS? Unless you drag race, IMO, NOS is just too impracticable for everyday diver.
