I just bought a 98 explorer with the 4.0 SOHC Auto 4wd. I was told the transmission was bad. So I started to pull it, when I got the transfer case out I noticed turning the input shaft by hand did not turn any of the other shafts. Does the electronics have to be plugged to engage or could this be my problem instead of my trans? Oh yeah I am new to this sight, and bought this truck to fix and sell. But after reading some of your guys posts and enthusiasim about the explorer, I think I'll keep it. Thanks for any light you can shed on this for a newbie!

Welcome to our forum:chug:

That's a good question! I know in the early models turning the input shaft would turn the output shaft unless it was a manual case in the neutral position. I'm going to move your thread to our Transmission and Transfer Case forum. Hopefully one of the members with a 2nd gen can help you out.

Moving the input shaft should move at least the rear output. Pull the shift motor off of the rear of the t-case and look at where the pointed part of the shaft is facing. the ranges are embossed on the case under where the shift motor mounts.

You can see it in this pic. If it's pointing at "N" that's why the outputs are not moving. Use a pair of pliers and move it to "H" then rotate the input shaft. The rear output should turn. If it's pointed at either "H" or "L" and the rear output doesn't turn with the input the case is toast.

Thanks guys, I'll be off work on Thursday and I'll check the t case, but my transmission is gone anyway. Had my wife sit in the truck and start it for me and I was able to hold the output shaft still, even in low with some throttle. I sure hope the case is good.
