2WD to 4WD conversion?

Planned Vehicle: 1993 Ford Explorer XLT Four Door 2WD

I am wondering if anyone has ever done a conversion like the one I am wanting. Which is to take the '93 2WD and convert it to a 4WD.. I know there are many parts that I will need, which is not a problem, there's about 6 junkyards within 10 miles of my location.

But I am wondering if the tranny will be different, and just HOW MUCH TROUBLE am I getting myself into.

I think with the price it is to buy a used first gen so low already, it is almost a waste to attempt such a conversion. I see first gen explorers around here, four wheel drive, for $1000 or less. Not to mention, if you were to be willing to spend the money and time on something like that, wouldn't it be much more fun to have an Solid Axle Swapped Ex?

ive been thinking about doign the same conversion on my 92....but ive decided that if im gonna go through the trouble of making it 4x4 im gonna make it worth it...so im gonna buy some one ton axles and such my goal is to have it sittin high on some 40 inch tires...and my friend has the 4x4 version of my truck....and ive done some comparing...its a ton of work...but im going solid front axle so i already knew that....and im gonna try to go to the junkyard as much as i can to get stuff jsut so i get it cheap...

i have a d35 for sale. but believe the tyranny will need a new tale housing and out put shaft

Yea you can either replace the tailhousing and output shaft or you can just get a 4x4 tranny and transfercase from the junkyard which is easier and probably cheaper.

thanks for the input. i guess that would be easier, to find a first generation that is 4x4 all ready. i just hate not being able to go out muddin for the fear of getting stuck. plus having the 4x4 option is just nice to have.

i think i might take that advice, and find a 4x4 for cheap, and fix that up.
