Just purchased a 2003 Ranger, 3.0L, 5 speed, 4x4 with 25K miles, one owner, got a good deal.

I want to do a few minor mods, maybe more air in and a chip.

What are the best mods to do to get better gas milage ?

Thanks,

I used to have a 92' 2WD supercab with a 3.0. I did a few things to it that really woke it up.

1. Upgrade your coil to a nice aftermarket one. Since yours is an 03', skip.
2. Get some big 8mm wires(or 10mm) whatever.
3. Don't cheap out on plugs, I used some 4 prong platinum ones.
4. Find a muffler shop that does mandrel bending. I got a 2 1/2" stainless mandrel bent custom system made with a high flow cat and a reasonably quiet magnaflow stainless muffler. This wasn't cheap, $1200.
5. Convert to an electric fan.
6. Depending on how your intake is set up, Get a piece of 3" stainless bent to replace the crappy, restrictive plastic intake pipes. A k&n doesn't hurt either. Or if K&N makes a FIPK for your year of truck then get that instead.

With these mods, my truck would pull like bananas after 3000 rpm strongly up to redline. For reference, it would stay side by side with a prelude v-tec in a friendly drag.

I liked the 3.0, it was a good reliable engine for me. Good luck.

Thanks for the replies.
I am thinking Computer Chip, Intake Air System and Exhaust but not headers, simple stuff.

Thanks again,

Thats OK, I didn't mention headers, and I can't recall ever seeing a company that had reasonably priced ones, if any. The exhaust I had used the stock manifolds and under-engine cross pipe.

...Sandy, Mountaineergreen may have some insight as he bought an older 3.0L a few months back...;)

...I usually do a fuel/milage reading right off the bat followed by a personal tune-up...Your fuel milage and the vehicle will usually show you your progress...But as most have stated, good parts for tune-up, CAI, exhaust, and yes tires, can make a huge improvement...:dunno:

that is a good deal sandy
