My ‘04 3.73 rear end is going out. I have an ‘05 Explorer donor that has the 3.55 rear end. Is this just a direct swap? Are there any significant issues to consider?

I’m pushing 300k on the vehicle and just want to maximize its life.

Is the 04 4WD? That would be a huge problem.

How do you know it's going??
Maybe it's a Wheel Bearing..
Front and Rear Axle's need to have the same Ring Gear..

Howls under load. My understanding is that the front end is the same for all the 3rd gen’s.

Both the ‘04 & ‘05 are 4wd.
Then you need to swap both front and rear. Otherwise, you will have different drive ratios in the front and rear. If you put the vehicle in 4WD with different ratios things break. Usually not cheap things. Usually it's the t/case as it can't take the difference of one turning faster than the other.

Wiggle the Driveshaft near the Pinion.. My Pinion Nut came loose recently.. I put Threadlocker on it and it's been fine..

That’s a lot of work.
right but you cant run 373 and 355 in the same truck. if not you can disconnect the driveshaft and essentially get rid of 4x4.

Are these 3.73 all limited slip on the 3rd gen’s?
No, there's also open. Axle code 46 is 3.73 open and for the limited slip the 1st digit will be a letter, D3 or D6 I believe.

If 46 is the open, as 45 is the 3.55, then D4 must be the limited slip. I have a D4, but I didn’t know that would say limited or not, thought it only meant 3.73.

Any mustang shops local? That's an easy 8.8 to bench build. Bearing kits are $125, another $100 for side axle seals and $70 for gear oil.

I was able to locate one locally(only one in Atlanta) for $200. Only has 139,000 miles on it.

I’m sure that you-pull-it’s have them, I just don’t have the time to go mess with it.

Worth the money for them to pull it for you.
