Just a quick question for you guys. I am new to this off-road thing. I bought my x lifted with 32" BFG muds. I was looking around today online for some bigger tires and saw that super swamper has some 34" tires. Would i need to change gears with those? i am getting a 3 inch bodylift soon and already have a 4 inch superlift. Will they fit with a little trimming? Sorry for the dumb questions but i searched and didnt find any info. Thanks for your time.

Come on im sure somebody can help me out here guys.

what gears do you have now? if they are the stock gears, you should change them to have the best peformance... in reality, you dont have to change gears, but it helps if you want performance close to stock or better specs... my friend has 35s on his jeep with 3.08 gears... he gets great freeway mileage, but is slower than a turtle off the line....
7" of lift with trimming should be enough for 34s

so for just driving around town and stuff i will be ok until i get money for gears? they are just the stock gears in there right now. Will the stock gears be ok for offroading? The tires are super swamper LTB's. has anyone had experience with these tires? Im just wondering about them wearing quick.

anyone wanna help me out here. I appreciate the info i got but would like to try to get more.

The super swamper LTB's are a bias-ply tire, meaning there aren't any steel belts in them. Bias-plys tend to wear more quickly than radials, and I've also heard a few people on this site say that the bias-plys also get thrown out of round, making them impossible to balance. I have a set of super swamper TRXUS on my '01 ex, and I love em. They're a radial tire, and they've taken everything I've thrown at them with ease. So unless you're going to be spending most of your time on the trail, I'd go with a set of radials.

ok thank you that was the info that i was looking for. Do you know of any radials that come in 34". i really rather go with that size than 35". Are the stock gears going to be okay for off-roading or should i invest in new ones. And if so what ratio do you recommend. I appreciate your help. It seems that nobody wanted to help me out with this.

Interco TRXUS radial 34x12.50-15 $160

The interco TRXUS come in 34x12.50r15 and 34x12.50r16 sizes, depending on what size wheels you have. As for the gearing, you'll probably want to go with at least a 4.10 ratio with 34 inch tires. The stock ratio on my ex is 3.73, but I'm not sure what the stock ratio is for the earlier model explorers. A friend of mine is running 35's on his Chevy with a 3.73 ratio, but he has a bunch of engine mods including a k&n air intake system and a NOS kit which adds about a hundred a fifty horses. So unless you're planning on modifying your engine, I'd re-gear with a 4.10 ratio or higher.

well.... hate to break it to ya.... but running a super swamper 34" with out 4" and 3" body lift..... you gonna rub.... probley alot... your gonna have to do some trimming.... when i had about 9" i rubbed with 35's

so with 4 inches of suspension lift and 3 inches of body lift i will still rub with 34's? i have trimmed a little bit already knowing i wanted to go bigger. So you think i wont possibly be able to do it?

ok cool. i figured i would need to do ALOT of trimming. I have already done some knowing i wanted to go bigger in the future. Thank you for your help though i appreciate it. I am just new to the off-roading thing and you guys seem very knowledgeable. Thanks again

If you don't change your gears, it is harder on your tranny. Not to mention your gas mileage will get even worse since you have to put your foot to the floor to try to get out of your own way. I have 35's on my x, and I just recently put 4.11 gears in it. You can defintely tell the difference.

must have hit the button too much on accident. 4:10

Depends on who sells the gears. They should be 41/10 = 4.10. But as I've been looking around, a lot of places have them listed between 4.08 and 4.11.
Ya OK this was a wasted post....

Ya I think its just typos or the person that's selling isnt the one updating the website or eBay site. There is no other possible tooth ratio that gives close to a 4.10.
