Yesterday, I stopped by the local Cottman Store to have the Free 21 Point checkup done on my '97 XLT V6 SOHC (103K miles). The tranny occasionally slips a bit between 2nd and 3rd gear. They test drove my X and ran a scan. There were no codes but they did notice the slipping. They were in a big hurry to give me a ride home and get to work on the X. They said it would cost $350 for them to take the tranny out and at that point they would tell me what it would cost to fix it. I know it probably needs a rebuild, but in reading other posts in the forum, I don't think I want to go down that road.

What do you think? Does anyone know a good tranny shop in the Denver area. These guys seemed a bit to eager to start my tab so I don't think I trust them.

Thanks.

One of the guys on here has had a couple of trannys done and swears buy the company that did it... I'll see if I can get ahold of him and ask him...

I wouldn't trust them either...

the company is called budget transmission off of santa fe and 285----they are Tom Martino recomended and all---i have been there twice---that sounds bad---but i broke my first OEM one thru normal wear and tear, the second went thru over torqueing the whole tranny offroading and all (my fault), so i had my third one done---u know u have been there too much when they give u a shift kit for free to keep u away----look them up--great group of guys---also is only 200 or so to remove the tranny and all to tell u, and their work is the best i have found.....

later days

I would avoid the chain shops like the plague. IMO Cottman is hosing you if they want to take it out to find out what is wrong. If it is something minnor how much are they going to charge you to put it back in?

Don't sweat it..

It's not in bad condition from the sounds of it, just keep driving it till it's really annoying. Mine's been acting up for about 10,000 Km and hasn't gotten any worse, In fact by having the fluids and filter changed it really improved the performance.. Cost me $100 Cdn.
My tranny guy figures most of the times with these trannies it's a valve body issue.

Thanks for the info. Funny thing.....the manager at the local shop that seemed a bit overly eager, has called me each of the last two days to see if I have decided what to do. They can hardly wait to get their hands on my Explorer.

Yea, sounds like he can hardly wait to see you and your Visa again real soon..
