Ok so I'm thinking about investing in a K&N 57 Series Performance intake Kit, as they claim an extra 10HP gain from the added airflow.

Now my problem is, I took a look at the installation instructions online first, and it calls for the removal of the "bottles" during install, and uses the factory mounting holes from the Washer Fluid bottle for the heat sheild... so in the final stage only the engine coolant bottle is re-installed and the end of the air intake with the filter rests where the Washer Fluid res used to be.

Now I love the idea of an extra 10HP, but what the hell are we supposed to do when washer fluid is needed?

EDIT:

Never mind, I'm a dumb ass... I wasn't thinking straight. You remove the old air filter box completely during installion, and the new K&N filter sits in the space the old air box used to occupy!

On my Volant you use the same screw to hold both the washer fluid and the filter box, maybe that's what the instructions call for?? :dunno:

First of all, be wary of the HP claims of all the intake manufacturers. They're a nice mod, but don't expect anywhere near the performance gains that their marketing departments use. If they really could deliver that sort of HP, they'd include dyno data. Not surprisingly...they don't.

That being said, an air intake mated up to an upgraded exhaust is a great performance boost. Tie it together with a custom tune and you'll love the performance of your ride.

Just don't get hung up on HP claims!

Hey Celly, yeah I know to take the claims with a grain of salt... but K&N actually does supply a dyno sheet on their site, for this model of kit at least.

Well, whatya know?

I've seen claims of upward of 30 HP for some kits so it's nice to know someone is actually backing it up with empirical data.

What the other guy said about your washer bottle makes sense (i.e. re-use the hardware). I don't have a 3rd gen Explorer (2nd gen) so I can't say for sure. Enjoy the upgrade.

Haha yeah, the fact they actually supply some data is what got me excited about doing this mod. I'll be following that with an exhaust shortly as you suggested earlier. I was thinking about the Flowmaster 44 series in that regard, but I'm still researching.

Oh and regaring my original question in the thread, I'm a dumb ass... I wasn't thinking straight. You remove the old air filter box completely during installiaton, and the new K&N filter sits in the space the old air box used to occupy!

That's what happens when you got too much brewing in the brain at once I guess! haha

Yup, you take off the original box and replace it

And you keep your washer fluid tank

Do you still have the stock airbox? I decided to modify mine and it went to hell. Now Ford wants to charge me $250 for the top portion of the airbox. Crazy F**K*rs. All I need is the top portion but will purchase whole thing if you want.

This should be easily found at just about any junkyard. I worked at one, and trust me, the air cleaner lid/box is practically garbage to them. Sure they'll want something for it, but shouldn't be more than $10 or so.
