4.0 Crapped out, 4.6 Transplant!

The bottom end is a 4.6 out of a 1997 Mercury Cougar, the PI heads are out of a 2001 Crown Victoria. They came with the upgraded cams. I am going to add the intake manifold off of a Mustang GT. Then do exhaust w/o cats and get it tuned. Not to mention the already improved heads are getting a valve job and are being ported. Should be a pretty good power jump.

Your going need a computer from an aviator if ur running dohc if ur sohc then a explorer will work, and and somebody to tune out the stuff Ull cut out, ie the aviator runs a dual runner intake with electronic butterflies but the computer is plug and play with ur explorer. Lol o and if u want ac get an ac hose from a v8 explorer as well( the one that goes from the compressor to. the condessor and canister ). The v6 and v8 radiators r the same, so you're good there. Pretty simple though lol

It is a SOHC. Deciding if I really need AC... The guy I bought the engine from took the internals out of the AC compressor, so I would have to do that. It only hits 110 0n a really hot day in KC so I can just drive faster haha.

Yep then it'll b simple! Ull just need a computer from a v8 explorer and an engine harness to make it even easier, just plug and play! Lol and then Ull b in the v8 swap club lol

Ordering a Mustang 4.6 harness off eBay. From what I hear it is a very limited club Haha.

I know this is totally off topic but what is an NBX explorer? But on topic your build is gonna be pretty sweet im subscribed!

Freakin figures, called the Machinist and asked what was up. He said it would still be another 2 days. Putting me a total of 2 weeks behind schedule. Why is it so hard to get people to stick to their own deadline that they set? Really starting to piss me off...

V8 Swap

Definitely fill everyone in with pics! It will be interesting to see this project finished. It may very well be an idea I will keep in mind if my 4.0L craps out.

Ah gotcha. I run a similar setup in my '96 GT. I put down 260 rwhp though.

Got my heads back from the shop. Even though it was ridiculous how long it took, They look AWESOME! Assembly begins this evening.

Nice! Can't wait to see some numbers, just a fyi the next thing that will probley break will be your rear dive line if it has higher miles( if its like mine you will break a cv joint lol, more power+ 3.55 gears+ open diff= sheared cv shaft :D)

That is the thing though. The miles really aren't that high. I just rolled 120,000 miles.

Ya its not bad if you kept maintains on it, mine only had 124000 on it but I don't know how much the previous owner keep it up. But there's a reason why v8 explorers from factory had the lsd in it lol If you don't do to many quick launches, you b all right but you've been warned lol

I bought it with 60,000 miles on it. Ran full synthetic every 5,000 miles. Did all the regular maintenance. The only thing I did that would have been any stress would have been pulling a small boat, and a trailer with four dirtbikes on it. So I have no idea. This just gave me the excuse I needed to my other half to go with a V8.

Finally got the time to get my heads assembled and lubed.

We shall see how it goes. I have heard contradicting stories on if the the 5r55 transmission will match up, or if I need to go find a 4r70w... I would know if I pulled the engine, but I need garage space first. Little brother thought it was a good idea to put a Mercedes diesel in to his Jeep.

The 4.0l and 4.6l 5r55 trans is identical internally, the bellhousing, which is part of the case, and the torque converter are the only differences. It would be easier to find a 5r55 for a 4.6l than a trying to get a 4r70 to work with the explorer ecu. Plus you better have some heavy duty springs in the front of that thing, the factory explorer 4.6l is an aluminum block, not iron. But good luck on all of it, I hope to do a 4.0l to 4.6l swap someday. I have a 4.6l 5r55 trans case and torque converter in my shed just waiting.
